I found out my Supra doesn't have LSD.
I did a search with no luck.
Is there a way to add a Toyota or after market LSD to the diff without taking it apart/rebuilding it?
In 4x4 trucks, they make several diff lockers that you just install in the diff with little work.

"Installation is simple because no ring and pinion set-up is required. In addition, no special tools or oils are needed. Step by step model specific instructions are provided with every kit."

How do you tell if a LSD is still good either still in the diff or removed from the diff?
Are all the MKlll LSD the same? That is, if I find one that is not my gear ratio 4.30, can I just swap out the LSD unit and install it in my diff?

i thought about the truck locker idea, but the diffs in the truck and the ones in our cars are completely differant

Landtoy: Depends on you use for the car and driving style but you might consider the 4.10 T1 Torsen from a JZA70.

They won't stand up to drag launches but I've used one at 550rwhp without breaking it and they're SO much nicer to drive than an LSD.

If you can source one for me I would love to give one a shot... :)

LT80: Then a Torsen is for you!

No drag when turning tight radius no understeer in tight corners all adds to better fuel mileage :)

Colin: I have one sitting in my spare parts shed but shipping would suck due to the weight!(you need the stub axles so it's easier to source a complete pumpkin)

I'm sure there are a bunch of them over there that people won't use as they break the carrier under hard launches with sticky tires.

Me and Aaron from driftmotion took my 3.9 lsd rear end and took a 4.3 non lsd rear end and made a 4.3 lsd out of the two using the 4.3 case and ring and pinion gear, and the lsd assemblly from my old rear end. It works awesome and made a big difference in acceleration!:naughty:

I don't know if a 4.3 is helping your gas mileage...
It takes a certain amount of power to propel you at a certain speed. Whether you make that power at 3000 (more fuel per rev) or 3600 (sips of fuel per rev) revs (average highway cruise) makes very little difference in fuel economy.

Ian, on MKIII Tech he has another listed as a 3.91 Torsen from auto cars, ever run across one of those?

when i had my 240 i used a kit from phantomgrip.com...it was a simple install, but i wasnt pushing that much power through it. cheap alternative that worked great for me tho.

What is a Torsen and how does it differ from a LSD?
What needs to be done to mount the Torsen to my '87?
Does it bolt in using my axles or does it need to be modified?

When I call salvage yards, what years and other info do I need to ask?
They need year and if it was turbo, a/c, auto/5speed, colur of steering wheel etc.

I was going to create a separate thread, but since everyone is on the subject I figure I will post here.

I need a new LSD diff right away, but am not sure which to choose. I know there are aftermarket ones (Cusco, Kaaz, TRD) but I don't want to spend that much at this point. So I have a few questions that may help others as well when choosing a diff.

I'm going to be pushing HP/TQ in the low to mid 500 range. I plan on using the car mostly for roadcourse/track/autocross. I currently have no intention of getting into drift/drag. I'm sure I will be launching hard on occasion, but not on slicks.

What ratio is recommended for auto x & roadcourse vs. drag strip? Am I correct in thinking the 4.30/4.10 would have a lower top end (shorter gears) with quicker acceleration vs. 3.7/3.9 with a higher top end (longer gears) and less off the line acceleration?

There are 3 MKIII LSD diffs that I know of. 4.30 on all non turbos with the sport package, or special ordered. 3.93 on 87-88 turbos and 3.73 on 89-92 turbos. Dunno if they did different diffs on the 2.5tt or not.
