I installed my rebuilt head last weekend and I plugged the EGR port (on the back of the head, dumb move I know). After driving it for the week I feel like it is running a little hotter than before. After pulling it apart and seeing all of the carbon I blamed it on the EGR. Any way, I am wondering if anyone has ever put on an EGR cooler with the engine and head in the car. I was thinking of taking off rhe motor mounts and lowering it as much as it goes. I would rather not try to move it forward. Any suggestions?

I've done it, it's a real pain. I had to buy a special set of low profile socket wrenches to do it. If you lower it that might help.

1 - Gearwrench 10mm flex-head ratcheting wench
2 - Gearwrench 10mm socket that snaps into ratcheting wrench
3 - jackstands and a jack

Jack up the ass end of the car and put it on stands; unbolt the transmission mount and jack up the back of the trans slightly. This will rock the engine forward just enough to get the cooler and bolts on the back of the head and leave you room for ratcheting!

my plans were to change the oil and filter, install my new injector clips, compression test, retorque head, flush coolant and refill with good antifrezze. and also was gonna put the coil pack cover and the plastic/rubber under cover back on. while I was doing it I was gona try to put the EGR back on. So you are saying that the under cover will help more than EGR in traffic on my afternoon commuit?

+1. It's not easy, but with some determination and some astroglide on your left arm it can be done.

I had the intake off (long story) and the harness out (swapping in a new one) and it took about 30-45 minutes, including stretching the back:biglaugh:

Me and my cousin did it with the head in the car. It was a pain in the ass though. Swivels really help if you have some. Give it a try.
