Recently got a ticket for "Unecessary Noise". I've been running around with no muffler on my car. Was told by officer that it's simply a fix-it ticket. Just put a muffler on, show receipt, and pics to city prosecutor and it will most likely be dismissed.

I just wanted a cheap muffler for the time being just to get the ticket dismissed. I decided to go with Summit Racing turbo muffler.

3" inlet with dual 3" outlets. I welded it up myself, and yes it's a little crooked. I thought about busting the welds and repositioning it, but decided to save that job until I put on the muffler I really wanted on to begin with.
This is a turbo style muffler which I believe is the most restrictive performance muffler vs. chambered and straight through designs. It still rumbles at idle, and has a deep rumble when cruising. Under WOT conditions I can hear my turbo spooling over the exhaust. It's pretty quiet, except when my wastegate dumps to atmosphere. I think I'm going to re-route the wastegate dump back into the exhaust. I want to keep it as quiet as possible. It was cheap, and easy to weld up with a basic flux core mig welder. Welds don't look pretty, but it's functional.

Nice, sucks about your ticket. Sapd? And you know we are in stage 2 water restrictions l:icon_bigg. Nice grass.

lol, yes I know about the restrictions. I hand water twice a week, even on my allowed "sprinkler" day.

Yeah, SAPD. The only reason I ever ran my car without a muffler is because I spoke to another SAPD officer in the past about running without a muffler. He said it wasn't illegal, and that in the state of Texas a muffler was not required equipment. Just as long as your tailpipe extended past your passenger compartment which mine did.

And no, my car wasn't that loud without a muffler. It just so happened I went cruising on a night where alot of street racers hang out at. He targeted my Supra, and pulled me over. I did question if a muffler was required in the state of Texas and he said that my exhaust can't just dump like that without one. He quickly told me it was a fix-it ticket and would be taken care of easily. I didn't want to press the issue cause I also didn't have my drivers license with me. Like a dummy I left my wallet at home. So I didn't want to piss him off have him tow my car away for being a smart ass. I just let it go and put a muffler on. I'll let you guys know how the ticket gets resolved in the next coming weeks.

Most restrictive? I would have thought they copied or had Borla make it as a generic label. As theirs is straight through. Most "turbo mufflers" I have seen are straight through with the mesh.

yeah 'turbo' are definitively an outdated design and so far ive only seen them used on 'well they said i needed a muffler' emissions deals.

oddly enough ive seen different 'turbo' designs.

one is an 's' shape in the housing
newer designs use a 'w' shape or maybe a '3' shape ;)

ive seen glasspacks called turbo as well but that could've been an error *shrug*

and these are designs coming from the 60's =/

Yeah, they're not the most up to date performance style mufflers but it's going to get the job done. Like pictured above they look like this inside.

I wonder if it knocked me back a few ponies. We shall soon see as I have an itch to go back to the dragstrip. I'll let you guys know how it performs (or not) at the strip.

They can still flow a lot of volume, so I doubt you lost any jam. If so, it wouldn't be much.

Had one of these on my mildly modded civic back in the day and it did not lose any discernible power according to the g-tech pro.

Too loud with no muffler? Pretty sure the Supras I've heard that have mufflers are louder than my Supra without one.

It depends on your turbo size and if you have one or not. A small turbo is a great muffler. A big turbo is not. A turbo with an efficient turbine design is quieter than an older less efficient design. A non-turbo is always louder than a turbo car with the same muffler.

The Mazdaspeed3 and Neon SRT-4 have small turbos and are quiet enough that they don't even come from the factory with mufflers, just a few small resonators. I tried that on my Supra and it was too loud, the bigger turbo just doesn't quiet things down enough.

^Plus when you get into boost and the waste gate opens, that is exhaust by-passing the turbine and is un-muffled.

I remember running a straight pipe on my 86 volvo 740 turbo a few years back. It was very quiet until you got heavy into boost. Then it barked like an NA...lol.
