Installed clutch, put the starter on and motor won't turn over

I replaced the clutch today on my 1JZ/R154, but I have a weird problem. After I bolt the starter on and try to turn the crank pulley with a wrench, it only turns about 1/10 of a full rotation of the crank. It sounds like something hits something and it won't go past it, then I can go back about 1/10 of a full crank rotation and again it hits something.

Has anybody had this problem before?

if you take starter off does it turn 360 deg ?

And if the only thing you changed is clutch/pressure plate..... id pull it back apart and look real real good... you dont want to have something come apart or start hitting shit at WOT...

Seems like the starter teeth hit the edge of the flywheel(this is a twin disk clutch).

Could it be that the flywheel is backwards, or it is the wrong flywheel????? I dont know if you can even install the flywheel backwards or not.

no you cant install flywheel backwards....
I know nothing about supra clutches... but in cases of after market parts there is always some kinda modifacations.....
id say if its just barrly hitting starter grind the housing just a tad...
Like hold starter in place and twist it ever so slightly and see if it will clear... main thing is ... the teeth need to line up...

No I didnt have any shims on it. I just looked and noticed that my original 1JZ flywheel has a chamfer on the backside of the flywheel, same place where the starter hits the RPS flywheel.

thats only on autos not manuals

your flywheel *looks* like its in the right location. maybe try a different starter?

this very same thing happened to my rps twin disc, MY highly recommendation is you actually taking that clutch back out and have rps rebalance it, or else you will be sorry, my clutch is out of balance since my starter hit my flywheel, and it is shuttering/chattering like a madman, i had i think a 7m stater on my supra, it has this front aluminum housing that covers the teeth, then my clutch took a good chunk out of it, i put in a 2jz-gte starter, and it's fine, but now my clutch is shaking the whole car i'ts insane on 1st gear take off and reverse, i highly highly, recommend you sending it back to the manufacturer for a rebalance, and mine is a carbon/carbon

If he only turned it over by hand, the flywheel should be fine. I would just figure out where the starter housing interferes and file it down if possible.

filing it down will not help, my rps flywheel took a chunk out of it, a big chunk out and it was still hitting when i first started my car up and when it first initially hit, best thing to do is to swap to a 2jz starter or at lease one without the front housing

I had the same problem with the os giken triple clutch

Butt i am running the 6 speed gearbox

Just rebuild the starter and the problem was gone

I think the problem is that the bendix from the starter is OLD and the flywheel new so the theets do no match 100 Procent

Butt its strange that you can not turn the engine when you bolt on the starter

The engine must turn when you bolt on the starter otherwise something is wrong there

Because when you are going to start the engine the bendix wil go out to grap the flywheel

Hmm let somebody turn the engine for you so yoy can see what happening under tha car
