what woul make you have higher then the allowed hydrocarbons in the exhaust?

and they didn't know how to use the drivers side window switch to put my window up haha :biglaugh: so they were like its broken i was like what? not its not haha

but yeah, back on to what i asked, what would cause this? bad cat?

well i have a exhaust leak on the downpipe somewhere so that could be it too i guess

and there is a crack on the hose for the stock bov the one that connects to the 3000 pipe (the larger hose thats set up like accordion hose bov in the middle and then 3000 pipe), i assume that could cause some boost leak

i didn't have much over though, the allowed is 144 i had 155

Hydrocarbons are unburned fuel. Do you have the fuel pressure raised? How old is your 02 sensor? How are the spark plugs? Wires? What are your mods? Did they run it without warming up the car?

Doubt a boost leak is the problem, the load test for emissions is a 50/15 i believe... 50% load at 15mph, i doubt it'll be in boost, likely under 20+ inches of Hg of vacuum. If there was a boost leak under vacuum like that it'd be lean if anything, it basically cruises on the dyno.

my car is stock at the moment

and it had to be warm i mean i got to the inspection place which is about a 15 minute drive plus waiting a little bit in line

o2 sensor age is unknown

spark plug wires and spark plugs im not to sure how they are eaither

im preparing for a rebuild so i wasn't really worrying about that stuff

wells, ya gotta do something to pass emissions, you're very close on hc's. Id grab some cheap ngk copper plugs and throw them in there... they're like a couple bucks a plug... and if it works, great.

yeah i suppose so

and i'll fix that cracked hose (its like not even rubber anymore its like stone lol)

maybe i get a good ol' tune up and drive on that motor longer (its running fine just a little high on hc and i have a exhaust leak that will be taken care off with my turbo back exhaust)

Run the car at highway speed about 20 minutes. I nice hot cat will give you better numbers for an emission test, I don't think it will do much if anything for HC's though.

Seems like you have a good start though, tune-up. Scan for codes as well. I don't know why, but my engine hasn't come on always when there were codes. Probably because was running good enough to not need the light, yet anyways.

IIRC for the less serious codes the ecu needs to detect them for three consecutive starts in order to keep the cel lit.

please correct me if I'm wrong

one thing the guy asked me was what kind of gas i was putting in the car so i said premium he said maybe try using regular

would that even work?

regardless i have to take care of the problem but just curious

Possibly, but like I said, I don't know how it works.


As for the premium gas, what octane do you use and what octane is recommended for your supra?

well i have a 89 turbo and the owner's manual says "the use of premium unleaded gasoline with a research octane no. of 96 (octane rating 91) or higher is recommended.

and thats what i have always used anyway

ok, so a little update on this

i took my car to have pretty much a tune up

have my air intake put on and spark plug wires that i already have
they would order the spark plugs
i also had 2 hoses for the bov because one had a crack in it

i get a call and the guy tells me a coil was burnt out and that one of the cylinders wasn't getting proper spark (if any at all i guess) so i was running on 5 cylinders which i would assume is where the extra amount of hydrocarbons would come in (unburnt fuel) when i had the emissions tested

i should be fine when i pick my car up today

If your cat is old, change it and change the spark plugs and the 02 sensor. Try running the STP fuel injector cleaner (some people on here may disagree) but I passed by changing all of that and adding the STP. Check your timing, it should be at the 10* mark and if you are Na it should idle at 750 RPm in neutral and 650 if you are GTE.

talk about new car feeling

wow my car feels so much stronger its boosting like no other

although they cut my downpipe (the precat was clogged like no other)
and it was cracking all in the flex area

now im sounding like some turbo truck but hey the turbo is spooling hard and i can hear my little stocker bov going pshhhh i didn't know it would lol that hose much have been cracked for a good while
