I'm trying to find a Toyota stero head unit with CD for my 91. The stock stereo cassette has two separate connector plugs on the back, but I've noticed several of the newer Toyota units only have one plug. Can anybody explain this? Does it have to do with an internal vs external amp?
Thks

Actually, I believe on the cassette only units from 90 or 91 on had a plug for the optional CD player.

Thanks, but still trying to figure out if one of the units that have on one plug in would work. My head unit has two rectagular plug connectors on the back, one a bit more narrow than the other, and the harness from the dash has both plugs that plug into it. Most of the head units I've seen (w/CD players) from later model Toyotas have only one plug in.

toyota has not changed their un-amplified harness since 86. the two plug harness you're refering to carries the rear speakers on one plug and the front and power etc. on the other plug.

the single plug you're refering too is a plug that leads to a spererate amplifier. MOST OF THE TIME, on the other side of the amp it has the standard two plug harness bt that's irrelevant here.

so to answer your question, the single plug will not work on a dual plug setup :)

Justin's dead on here.... I forgot about that, but now I recall it. My stereo harness for the fronts was gone but the seperate plug for the rears was still intact, so I hardwired the main harness and used an adapter for the rears.
