inconsistant knock top motor

i have a loud inconsistant knock coming from the top of the block i dont have a loss in compression and it is coming from cylinders 1 and 2 and the is hearing it from a stethiscope i am about to pull the head and look at it but before i do is there anything else i might be able to check all imput would be appreciated

check cam gears to see if they are loose. rare but possible if its rpm dependent

Cam caps also as it's pretty common for them to come loose.

Is it when it's hot or cold or doesn't matter? If it's on cold start you could be hearing piston slap. Check and make sure all bolts are torqued to spec as always.
