I am currently in the hiring process for a few police departments around the state. I received a call today from one of my top departments informing me that they were going to be visiting my house for an interview monday morning. The department I am referring to is some 4.5-5 hours away. I have never heard of an in home interview. Does anyone have experience with this? Obviously they must be interested if they are driving so far. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I've heard of that with police departments before. They are probably trying to get a feel for the stability of your home life & family, etc.. Personally I'd find that too intrusive, but then again I wouldn't apply to become a police officer.

Both Dunckel and atlpd3147 are cops, I'll send them a link to this and will ask them to comment.

Yea they specifically said they want to interview me but I figure they just want to see my home life. I was told the next phase of this particular process was a conditional offer so this sort of threw me for a loop.

It's only a trap if he had something like a active warrant for his arrest.
Anyways to the OP I don't find it unusual for a law enforcement agency to want a face to face time with a potential candidate.
Did you get a letter informing you about this interview or was it a phone call? Is it a large city or a really small town department that wants to do this in home interview?
And whatever you do during the application process just don't lie
Best of luck to you and remember once you become a law enforcement officer your life will change.
You will be held to a higher standard and the common Joe will dislike you or love you. If you know what I mean.
You're loved when you helped catch that scum bag that tjust robbed this elderly grandmother but you're hated when you give out a speeding ticket!:)

It's savannah Chatham metro so not big but not small. I believe they have 600-700 officers so it's a medium size department. I passed the polygraph, initial oral board interview, written test, physical test and I'm assuming the background since they're driving from savannah to Gwinnett county to interview me Monday. So we'll see what happens next.

One would have to be an incredibly dense SOB to apply to be a police officer with an active warrant out... I've known some stupid people in my time, but have you ever met anyone THAT dumb? If so, please share...

On the original subject, I don't find it odd at all. Buddy of mine with the USAF got his top secret clearance a while back, they dug through his life with more than one fine toothed comb...

Yea I am surprised they are driving this far, but I suppose it is normal in this line of work. What on earth do you wear for an "in home interview"?

If it's warm a "Wife Beater"?? ;)
(I'm guessing AltPd didn't see my post as a joke)

Hope the interview goes well Hornet, if they're travelling that far I'd take it as a good sign.
