i'm getting timing retarded?

guys I have an 89 i've been trying to get the bugs worked out of and it doesn't seem to want to run right, it's always running too rich under boost and running really hot on high rpm freeway driving without boost (EGT THAT IS) over 1500 degree at 80+mph just cruising, anyways I have complete fuel system with vpc and afc, I have try everything on my tuning, lower the fuel and rich the fuel settings and both and were not of help, it seems like the car is pulling timing in a way kinda like how it would if the knock sensor is bad or the engine light code is on for knock sensor, "BUT" IT DOESN'T PULL TIMING THAT BAD, I mean when boost hits at about 15psi or more the fuel doesn't get burn and all you see is black smoke from the tail pipe. This is a dumb problem and I can't seem to find it, if anyone might have ANY toughts of what it is please share it with me, I have changed EVERYTHING that I think it was and still, nothing. I'm lost here and been lost for the last year or so with this car, I just keep cracking ring lands on the pistons because I'm running so rich trying to test the car under full boost, and that's why I said, F it i'm going fully build so the pistons would hold a little more heat, SO.....any toughts guys?? Thanks for your time.

you wouldnt happen to have a code 52, would you? (knock sensor) - that would retard the timing, and enrichen fuel mixture.

just a shot in the dark right now....

EDIT: heh, i was at work before, and didnt get to read the entire post. so i'm assuming you dont have a code 52. maybe you got some bad gas? do you have an AFPR? if you do, does it have the vacuum sensitive port on it to raise fuel pressure in a 1:1 ratio with boost? if so, there's your rich at WOT problem. you cant tune it out with the SAFC? hmmm. do you have a wideband? perhaps it's time to get one:)

no codes shaeff, and also yes I do have the fpr that is vacum sensitive, but those are always use on all turbo cars, dude I went all - across the afc from 3500 and on, still running rich as hell, but if I lean it out like that it still puff black smoke and then the egt goes faster to red zone, so what can it be huh? wideband is coming in this week. I know it's not the tuning this car needs, something is wrong with it I know that for a fact, and can't seem to fix it. that's why i'm sick of it......lol

damn... maybe you have a boost leak thats not causing fuel cut? maybe check those IC pipes over really well...? i'll keep thinking!

i've got vpc, trust me, no leaks for me, I did a leak down test tons of times just to make sure. :)

No I mean the actual Cam timing Steve.

If it's somehow slipped a tooth it might explain your issues (High EGTs)

The Cam timing could be out and the CPS could be set perfectly in relation to the Crank.

Usually if it's rich like you describe the EGT's are low.

humm, not quite because high egt's can mean it's running too rich or lean, but by my signs it's rich, plugs are shot black, and tail pipe blows pure black smoke when it chokes like I mention, Fu$k this car...... :aigo: .lol.....i'm going insang trying to work out the bugs....Timing slipped a tooth? na I don't think so because when the cover is off and it's at tdc both gears are right up stright like it's suppose to, THE CAR IS NOT BURNING UP THE FUEL, that's all I know now, :(

Are you sure you have the right chip in the vpc? VPC dip settings? AFC set to KV?

chip, yes I've got to, I mean I have two vpc's and even put the other one on and still same thing, also what would the dip settings be on it anyone know? and afc set to Kv? what is that, are you trying to say Karman? Please explain, it might be something dumb and easy, i'm sure of it.....

Make sure your VPC dip switches are set correctly, search on SF for it. Make sure the AFC is set to Karman Vortex, that will make a huge difference.

vpc switches settings, anyone know what it is? forums searching on sf is not working.....and afc set to karman "vortex" wtf is that? I have never heard of VORTEX on the afc's???? What.....hehehe make it seem more understanding please..
