Ignition/Starting Question

The Situation:

Hello. I own an 89 non turbo, 5 speed Supra. Since I've owned it I've never been able to start it from the key alone. Essentially, it is "setup" to start from a make-shift switched consisting of a wire running from the battery to an after market switch, near the hood latch, inside the car to another wire directly to the starter. The problem with just turning the key alone is that the starter doesn't get enough power. By pressing the button and turning the key simulatanously, I'm able to start the car with no problem. This was working up until recently but now the wiring has fallen apart and I'd like to take it as an opportunity to get it starting normally.

When I turn the key in the ignition position, I notice a few things. Firstly, I hear a click noise from inside the car near the glovebox on the passenger side. At the same time while I have the key in the ignition/starting position I've also noticed that the voltage gauge, which is accurate and functioning properly, drop as though the car is starting. This brings me to my question.

The Question:

Could this be an ignition switch problem? I've been told that the if the contact points on the ignition switch are bad then such an event COULD occur; however, I'd like a second opinion namely from this body of knowledge before taking it apart.

Thanks.

That makeshift wire, where is it hooked up to on the starter?

If it's hooked on to the starter solinoid, your experiencing the typical supra starter wire problem. As time ages, the plug that plugs into the starter soliniod wears out and it does not work very good. So when you turn the key to start, it does not send enough voltage to the soliniod to click it to engage the starter.

i definitely wouldnt look in the ignition first. get under and check your contact points - positive to starter, solenoid wire, all grounds. get a wire brush and clean em all off, then give a good coat of dielectric grease.

won't be that hard to rewire it normally since they didn't take the key option out altogether. just pick up the cables you need from someone parting out, or at advance or napa. on the other hand, you might just be able to rework it from your existing setup (then convert your aftermarket switch for nawz or something.)

I have the same problem, the starter's whatever they are are bad. One electircian already repaired em, and it lasted a couple of years, now he'll repair them once more :)
