The ignition coil on my 87 just died on me. Looking at after markets mostly because an msd blaster or Accel is cheaper then oe replacements and possibly will have better dwell time. Any way just seeing if any one has used any and had good or bad luck with them.

i use a msd balster 3 coil, the rewiring is pretty self explanitory i extended the ignitor to coil wires to the other side of car its really easy theres only two that hook up to stock coil, then i got a really short ig wire to shorten the ig wire length...strapped that coil down, and boom msd blaster 3 there ya go...

Thanks for the input, Yea i have seen ones for $30 just wonder about their quality still want something half decent. I did find factory replacements on rock auto for about $60 and $70. Prob go with one of those unless I can find an MSD or Accel that matches factory specs for primary and secondary coil resistance.

Just my opinion, but I think that you are over thinking it.
Any of the aftermarket ones will work, if you stay away from the 'CDI' only coils.
I have seen people running all brands, Accel, MSD, Crane, etc., with no problems.

Yes and maybe no. I don't mind much about brands, but it is important to get primary and secondary coil resistances close to factory specs because their is a chance of killing the igniter if their to far off. I've seen this happen with other cars. Mostly Honda's but they have probs with their igniters to begin with.

Ran an MSD blaster coil on my truck way back when, worked great at first (not hard considering the stock coil died), but it didn't last. My opinion of MSD and Accel is pretty terrible, brother worked at O'reilly and had to deal with tons of returns on them from failing (lifetime warranties).

I'v had a blaster 2 on my 85 pickup with 22RE and its lasted over 6 years now, but that coil was sold specifically for that engine. Also put one on my civic barely lasted a year, luckily didn't kill the igniter i'v seen 2 other Hondas have the igniter taken out with the coil. Most likely because the primary coil resistance didn't match pulling to much of a draw on the igniter.

I've decided to go with factory replacement, cost about $50 and its good brand. Also with stock engine not much of a need higher output coil.
Thanks for all your input.
