hey supramania, im a new member to both the supra world and the website, im currently in the process of picking up an 87 mkIII supra turbo hard top 5spd, the body is in really good shape (80k orig miles) and even thought the car isnt running i will be getting the original 7mgte motor that came with the car, the guy the has it told me he bought it with intentions of making a project out of it but lost interest,the guy he got the car from had started taking some of the motor appart because the car simply didnt start one day and thats how the car sits. so really i dont know whats even wrong wit the engine. I know about the weak head gaskets in the 7mgte motors, so i was thinking about going with a 1jz swap, now i have a few questions about that, what are the weak points on a 1jz?will the stock 87 trans bolt up to the 1 jz motor?what motor mounts can i use?how difficult will the swap be?is this swap worth it over buying another 7mgte? ive been reading alot on this website but mostly about the 7mgte thats why i know a little more about the 7mgte than the 1jz, thanks for looking and any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks, I've been researching for a while and I'm leaning towards the 7mgte because of how easy it is to get parts for it.but any input would be great.

Welcome to supramania.

The 1jz swap isn't that hard to do, but it is expensive. The easiest thing for you to do is check the motor in the one that you have. I doubt it's the motor fault that it wouldn't start one day. It's going to be something electrical more than likely. Check all of the codes first. Usually the supra will tell you why it's not feeeling good that day.

7m=$$$$
1jz=$$$$$
One more dollar sing.
I also had the dilemma you have. I stayed with the 7m since I could have my 7m built like a brick house(lower end and head) for about the same, maybe even a little less now, then it cost to swap in the 1jz.

Stock 1jz swap = $6000+ & you get 280 HP. The JZ dose make the engine bay look a lot cleaner. Lots of small things/parts to hunt down. (Hint: driftmotion.com ;)) It’s a 2.5 L. (Smaller) It will be a PITA trying to work the “bugs” out once installed. If going with a swap go for the 2JZ right away. Last it will be fun but you will want more, which will cost more $$$$.

Built 7m = $5900+turbo of choice & Hp is where ever you draw the line at with the turbo. No bugs to work out since it is the same engine that came out of the car. 7M performance market is STRONG and there is lots out there to chose from.
