I wanted to ask the community a Turbo Question

I searched but did not see a thread that was similar. If there is one I apologize, But I wanted to ask the community what they thought was a good reliable Turbo for 400-500 Hp range? It doesn't matter if its an upgrade or a replacement.

I plan on doing a rebuild soon and I'm not sure which route I want to attack (upgrade vs Replacement, if replacement which one?) I would like to have a low 13 sec to high 12 sec 1/4 mile but thats it. Nothing to crazy, lol

There are a lot of people with different turbos here and I just want to know what persuaded you on picking that turbo vs. another. Granted I know price and budget play a big part but lets just say price was not an issue (yeah right!) what would you guys recommend.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you want to spend. For your 1/4 mile time goals, a .57 trim upgraded CT-26 should get you there as long as you have all of the other supporting mods and decent launching skills.

If you want to convert (using an adapter) to a t3 flanged turbo, and have a turbo that is bullet proof, run a Holset HY35/40 off a Dodge Ram.

They are good to 500hp, cheap to rebuild, and BULLET PROOF.

Only problem is that hardly anybody makes a t3 flanged mani.

you can run 12's on the stock ct, but thats with tires and driving skills. aside from upgrading the ct the next thing is the sp61gt, bolt on turbo good for much hp. my goals are 13.5 and i'm running a 50 trim ct, although this is very close to the stock size compressor. personally i think learning to drive is alot cheaper than buying a big turbo.

Driving is reaily not the issue. Reliability, potential, and comparison to other turbos.

MDC, now thats a turbo I have yet to hear of. Bulletproof huh? sounds cool.

nice double post, dork... :D

HY35/40 is a great option... and I'm a bit torn between finding one of those, or spending way more on a GT40R.

Yeah I was thinking about the GT40R, an SP61gt, or a upgrade ct26. Torn as well. I will also research the HY35 now. Thanks.

I have no idea about your question. I just felt compelled to reply, as my car will look like yours soon! Rims are pretty different (painted black, 18x9.5R 18x8.5F), but it's red, 88, but I'm swapping everything to 89. Bumper, grills, euro fogs (I think yours are USDM), mouldings, and I even got the clear corners like you have. I'm dying to see all of this in my car.. some of it is on the way already. I hope my 88 not-folding mirrors don't affect me too much :(

Option A:-
Buy a 62-1 turbonetics HIFI, then Buy the CT26 Stage 5 Housing from turbonetics , supply the oil lines and water lines and now you have a Bolton Turbo for about $1000-1200.

Option B:-
Garrett GT35R, Ebay manifold, HKS/Turbonetics/ Wastegate/Plumbing, and you got a aftermarket setup for about $1800-2000.

Option C:- Upgrade CT-26 60-1, Spool til you can afford a better option.

Well I just acquired a turbonetics t04 cast manifold for my 7m! My goals are the same as yours but mainly I want 400whp+ at a much lower boost then I have to run on my 50 trim ct26, and I want fast spool. When everything gets dialed in nicely I would like to go for the 450+ whp mark on the high boost setting, just in case I line up next to a mk4 or a Civic, those are fast cars. ;)
I have been asking around and the gt3540r with .82 ar seems to fit the bill.
I have a hookup on Garrett so we will see if I can get it next week.
