Sorry in advance, but it's a pretty boring story. Wanted to get it off my chest because I didn't think it would walk me so bad...
I had just turned left at an intersection, when I see this BMW pull out of a Waffle House, and gun it down the road in front of me. He was going well over the speed limit, and though I would have liked to race him, I figured he was too far ahead, and I didn't want to tempt fate by trying to catch up at that point. Well, 1/2 mile down the road(a twisty one), I see that he's been caught at a red light, waiting to turn. Cool- that's MY left turn also.

Well, I pull up behind him, and wait for the light change. When it does, he starts rolling into the turn, but not very quickly. I was ready to jump on it, then when I see that he apparently has used up all his desire to speed, I backed off. Right then, he gets on it. so I get on it. Bottom line, I hit full boost (12psi) about 3 seconds into it, but it didn't matter. I went all the way up to 5500rpm, shifted, but never stopped the lead he was growing on me.
I was at least expecting to pace him...no good. It looked like a stock 1997 M3, prolly auto, because I didn't see any shifting lag. He just kept...moving away.... I looked up the car's specs- 240hp, 236ft-lb tq, 0-60@5.7ish,
1/4mi in 14.3 @100mph. I guess I shouldn't feel THAT badly...

In my defense(because I really feel the need to blame something), I have a slightly slipping clutch, and mild rodknock in cylinder 6. That will all change, though, when I put in my new motor/ driveline next month.

Thanks for reading.

PS- for any of you who have raced an M3 and won- what did it take? In other words, what were your mods?

on 12-13 psi i walked on an e36 m3 from a ~60 mph roll.
shimmed w/g
3in exhaust (downpipe back, no cat)(only thing i like about Alabama, no emissions)
k&n filter

you should have beat him on 12 psi, those m3's dyno at ~230hp and at 9psi i dyno'd 250hp. When i ran this guy, he was still accelerating from a stop light when i went by him at like 60 (he was prolly up to 50 when i passed him), in my sideview i see him start coming up, quickly, and when his nose was at my rear bumper i hit it. he came past me, but before there was a carlength between us, i started gaining and walked on him.

Your story is right and justified. I have an 1988 supra turbo with 288whp and my bro has a 1998 m3 with 235whp. I can just edge him out. Don't forget the m3 weighs less and it head flow mega air (almost 2j airflow) high rpm vanos cams. you'll get him one day..
Here is the good thing our cars are less expensive to buy and work on.

wtf. how you going to out handle a miata. I have full coilovers and I think a miata with just upgraded springs and shocks out handle it.

Anyway, my mods:
stock block/HG/head, Ebay IC, intercooler hardpipe setup, MAFT on a 3" GM MAF, stock fuel system except for Walbro and AFPR set 10psi over stock.
MBC @12psi, 3.9 rear, HKS "dirt devil" intake, Full 3" exhaust, on a custom separated DP,

I dyno'd 2 yrs ago @260HP, 261ft-lbs.

Next engine(on stand):
ported/polished head w/ Comp Cams springs, Titan 1.4mm MHG
block decked and bored over .020 w/ probe forged pistons, resized rods
Long engine oil cooler setup
TO4 on SS manifold
stage 3 clutch, aluminum flywheel, aluminum driveshaft with 2 safety loops
Still need the clutch and the turbo. Everything else is taunting me in boxes.

My dyno was at 9psi as well, but these days, I have bad idle vacuum, and I suspect that i've got fairly low or uneven compression.
How's the flying going? I'm still instructing, but supposed to go to a corporate interview this week(Kingairs and Beech jets)

alot of mods for only 250hp

Me? I was 260hp 2 yrs ago, and that was on just a 3 in. exhaust , IC setup and an AFM replacement, 9psi of boost. I didn't think it was so bad- like 75hp over stock at the flywheel. But still, it's obviously not enough.
