has anyone removed their dead pedal. Im trying to remove it so I can get rid of the carpet, but the groves for the screw driver arent deep enough to get the right amount of torque and unscrew the bastard. It also has a bit of corrosion which will make it harder to unscrew. SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE!!!!

Thanks guys/gals,

Dan

is there a nut or a hex head behind the flat head. There doesn't look like much room for a socket to get by between the screws and the rubber. I'll give it a try though. Thanks

Here is what I did..
I used a dremel cutting tool.. Held the tool sideways, so that the cutting wheel can cut into face of the screw hat. The cutting was done in the same direction of the groves on the dead pedal surface.. so, the overcutting to the rubber face wont show.. Basically, small dremel cutting wheel made a deep enough cut for me to stick a flat head screwdriver in there to take it off.. also, used WD-40.

Get more tools. Buy a screwdriver with deeper grooves. Spend like $20 and get an assortment of screwdrivers, or get a magnetic screwdriver with removable/replaceable phillips apex bits of different sizes.

Grim's suggestion would be best if said screw is rusted. :)

drunk medic,

I have about $8500 worth of tools in a $2000 snap-on tool box. I also have a level 2 apprentice until decided to quite because my dad offered me his company which has been around for over 10 years and has offices across the country. Now I just do work for friends and family for pleasure. Why else do you think I own a supra (have to keep my hands busy). I have plenty of screw drivers and bits but neither worked. I would have tried the dremel but the angle that the slots are in it will eat up my kick panel.

BTW how many people are running without the dead pedal. I hacked this one up already and don't know if it is worth purchasing another. I will if someone has on in good condition with good screws(PM pics if you want to sell). Does it make a big difference without it, better/worse?

When we took out the carpet of a junk car that the dead pedal was being a pain we just smashed it to oblivion. After that you can use like vise grips or something to get the screws out. You do need to purchase a new one though obviously. How expensive could they be though?

its not too hard... i defenetly wouldent run without a dead pedal... your a mechanic so you say? then you should have an appreciation for a car that has all of its pieces....not one that is missing random parts cause the owner is to lazy (or to cheap) to buy the proper parts.

1st off I have a level 2 apprentice not a journeyman certificate and no longer pulling wrenches for a company. 2nd my 99 Accord had a flat rubber piece as a dead pedal instead of a raised dead pedal like the Supra. I was thinking of replacing with a metal Sparco or Momo dead pedal. Having broken pieces, missing pieces or anything that is not normal is just not acceptable to me. It has to be perfect and if not I will make it perfect. Read my thread titled "winter project started" under general discussion http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8252. You'll see my plans for the interior and will be nothing but better than factory.

Saying that I would be too lazy or cheap is just an understatment. Cost isn't a factor when it comes to the Supra within reason. I'm not starting an argument here but simpily asking for help, becuase communication is a key factor for everything especially perfection. I'm sure there are other mechanics on the board who are asking for help and suggestions since no person is perfect.
