nice!!! rx-7 wheels with dupli-color graphite paint...

sure is!
i decided not to go w/ the clearcoat. i liked the finish that was on it and thought touch ups would be easier too if need be. looks pretty cool in the daylight.

thanks justin!

thanks guys!

im curious to see what my car will weigh when im all done. ~152lbs from the rim swap, removal of a/c, and spare tire. ive removed a lot of odd parts as well. im shooting for 3500lbs w/ me in it, but being 6'2 and 215lbs i have some work to do. esp if i dont want it looking like a theft recovery.

can you go into detail on your prepping.
I did the graphite thing to and now the paint is flaking off and looks hella ghetto.

sure thing.

cleaned it real good w/ degreaser and let it dry.

then went over it w/ 400 grit paper to smooth it all out (they were a bit scratched up and painted black). might be able to skip this step if in perfect shape.

followed this up with a good scrubbing w/ a wet green scotchbrite pad.

shake up the can til it feels like your arm is gonna fall off.

start w/ a real light coating, just enough to cover the wheel.

let dry 20 min then follow up with a heavier but still light to medium coat. be sure every 30 seconds or so you give it a quick shake and keep it about 10" from the wheel.

let dry 20-30 min then repeat.

follow this up by a heavier wet coat but dont get it too thick or it will run and wont be consistent.

repeat the medium coats as many as you like to get the darkness you want. just keep in mind it will be a shade darker when you put the wetter coat on it.

after this is done you can do the clearcoat if you want. be sure you use the wheel clear coat since it is formulated for the heat and brake dust.

let the paint cure about 2hrs before you start the clear coat.

again start out w/ thin coat and let it dry about 30 min.

follow up w/ 1 medium wet coat and let the wheels cure for 24hrs.

keep in mind you need to do all these steps in one setting. dont let the wheels sit for a few hours and do the next steps. if you do need to finish it later let them sit for 1 week for a full cure. if you try to recoat after a few hours it wont adhere as well for whatever reason.

if you time it right you can get it done in an afternoon easily. i cleaned all of them and did the sanding/scotchbrite on one wheel and coated. then while that dried started on the next wheel. got a pretty good cycle going. might want to use a sharpie to mark each wheel w/ how many coatings you have on it. i found it much easier to keep track that way. be sure you shake the can real good again between coatings. it likes to settle pretty quick.

hope this helps

Wheels look great Dave. That was dead on with the color choice in my opinion. The shop/garage looks like it has more room in the one I started in also, plus the banner was a nice touch. It will be nice to see it in person.

FWIW, my 89 Turbo with AC, all the goodies (minus TEMS) weighed in at 3380lbs with a full tank of gas, no driver and completely gutted from the front seats back (no trim, carpet, nothing)

thanks sean.

malloy- perhaps you just got a bad batch. that happens. just be sure you follow the time line and dont wait too long b/w coats.

89- no, i had mkiv tt rims w/ 235/40 and 275/40. the rear tire alone was 31lbs.

I think the FD rims are 15lbs each, so that's 36lbs saved switching to those from sawblades. Dunno where he got 68lbs from though :D

see above. also, i am including the weight difference of the tires and the lug nuts.

Ahh ok :) Well, you've got me interested in FD rims. I've really been looking for cheap 16x8 wheels that are light weight, and from the look if it, the FD rims are a perfect choice.

Except that damn Mazda logo! But for the money you save, it's worth it
