here's the rough details on the car - 86.5 NA BHG 220k on the original engine i think... wiring looks ok, but it has been messed with somewhat ... still chasing down dead bulbs to drop the dash warning light for ext lighting... the speedo & fuel gauges are not working right, dash/console/gauges otherwise in good shape, headliner/back seats in good shape... front buckets badly worn... All stock: susp, driveline & rearend, 5 sp man trans....trans is ok, synchros are just starting to go in 1st and 2nd (i think)

my skills are pretty basic with regard to car work, more of a pc/programmer/game modder but looking to make the jump to more "physical modding" on the car - love the idea of an engine/pc interface down the road

I have some time this summer and 3500 roughly to spend - was looking at possibly a jdm replacement engine, upgraded trans, alum driveshaft, new rearend... have also thought about going GTE or possibly 1JZ (anything else would seem beyond the budget....considering I also lack the current skill level or equipment "use for free" access to do it relatively cheap...)

1jz and 2jz setups come across as being very solid "stock" setups - a good trade off between quality performance and reliability - (maybe 2jz more so than 1jz...?_) - at any rate that is basically what i am looking to do...

Anyway, what would you guys do if you were looking to restore/begin building a quality 86.5 supra with 3.5k?

thanks input!

You will be hard pressed to do a full 1JZ set up for $3500 I am thinking. Misc stuff will take you over that goal a bit.
It might be close though.
2JZ will cost quite a bit more.

4000 would cover the swap. theres always something else you dont realize you need, or you break something. 3500 might be cutting it too close.

swap in a gte and have money left over for some goodies

when i replaced my ge last year the misc. parts was a killer, i almost spent more on misc. stuff than the motor itself.

I was thinking that going GTE would be a good compromise and set me up fairly well for eventually going 1jz - more so than going na -> 1jz directly, experience wise and hardware wise (to a lesser extent...)

I am worried about needing to do the hg, tb, new studs and retorque cost wise and started thinking... "if you are doing a wiring harness swap and putting in the motor with the requisite turbo parts (ic, new electonic systems for turbo mgt etc...) why not go ahead and spend the extra 500-1000 and go for a 1jz for around 4000-4500?" Starting to feel like i should stay with a ge and swap some driveline components up or go for broke and try to get up the cash for a 1jz and avoid gte problems altogether...

at least i have a bit of cash to do something with assuming i can ever come to a decision, make a plan, and start ordering parts, etc....

not sure what tq refers to group a supra... more torque?

Im with the general consensus on the GTE. Build the motor the right way and you would prob still have money left. Tq=torque... 7m has significantly more torque potential than the 1j because of the 3 liter block

Dunno where you are located, but for less than half of your budget, I have everything you need to put a turbo auto or maybe 5-speed in it... including dash and body harness, electronics (from behind the dash too), intrcooler, oil cooler, engine harness, 3" downpipe/elbow, etc etc....(3-piece taillights, 89+ body moldings)

For that much $$, find yourself a BHGed turbo MKIII (I got mine for $1K) and rebuild. You'll have everything you need, plus extra parts to sell and recoup your money (or trade to other Supra-owners for help). You'll learn lots along the way and probably end up with some very nice goodies (and fix the interior too).

Headgasket should be the least of worries buy one with the new motor and arp's and have it done while its out.Wiring harness can be had 150, turbo parts the forsale section or ebay.Search around theres deals around every corner, you just have to patient enough to wait for them

For $3500 you can find another complete GTE car which will have all the parts you need to swap the power train and then you can part the rest to recover close to half of you money for new parts such as a clutch & HG.

jdm 7m's (as i've learned) are a good bit different (different oil press. sending unit, different throttle body, different vacuum lines, coolant lines, and the egr of course...)... if you could, i'd try to find some kind of deal w/ a US 7m-gte... and would you be swapping yourself, or a shop doing it?

thanks much for the feedback

been thinking about what to do for some time now - researching etc

... some whining removed

after some consideration, I think I am going to go with the general call to try to do a GTE swap for under 3500 - think i may even have a line on some good parts

and I will keep ya posted if things solidify more on what i have going -

peace

Kind of want to give it a shot.. but I am severely lacking engine swap experience.... likely I will chicken out and have to have everything delivered to a shop and have them do it...

here's a pic of my current skill level for reference =)
