so, I got a new toy....

Its a 1986 AE86 corolla GTS.....

I paid $75 for it, and within 1 hour at the shop, it was running like the day it was new. I had to put a set of plugs in, drain the old nasty gas out, put fresh in, and change the oil. It runs like a top, with 86000 miles on it.

Now for the problem, The rear diff is toast. Anyone know what diffs out of what cars will fit in this thing? Its a solid axle,...

Hit up the salvage yard, they should know what diff's fit. (Or some AE86 sites.)

IIRC, it's smaller than the one used in the Supra, but I'm not sure of that. (Possibly the ring and pinion is different, and the diff is the same size? Don't know.)

Before you spend the money to replace it, make sure you have a LSD, then go buy a quart or more of moly additive gear oil. (Very black stuff, you have to shake it up too, to get the moly mixed up into the gear oil.)

This stuff will cure most "worn" clutch type diff's, and make ones that are in good shape about as tight as a spool. (Get ready for the noise if you use it on a good LSD. it's going to pop, bang and just be dang noisy at slow speeds in parking lots, or even when tooling around slower corners at anything less than about 25mph. Also when it's wet, the rear axle will want to trade places with the front at any speed, and one tire will always be slipping when your turning.)

I can't remember the product name, but I used this moly additive gear oil on my 82 Supra, and it cured the worn rear diff very well. Still made a howling noise, but it would light up both tires when I wanted to, and there was much better traction. Before I used the additive, only one tire would slip, and even with 160hp it was traction limited.

no selling..... this is gonna be my DD....

I don't think moly additive is going to fix this diff....I can go through all the gears and the car never attempts to move, but the diff makes a clunking noise the whole time.... (It is SCREWED). It'll probably have an open diff in it if thats what I find. I don't care for an LSD, its just a DD.... All I want is heat, A/C, Cruise, wipers, and a 5 speed..... Thats all I need for a DD...

I'm not going to be running this car hard or anything. And Yes, it is a GTS 4a-ge power baby!

we found a 4 door corolla with a 4a-c in it....83 model RWD at the scrap metal place and got the entire rear end out of it and swapped it in the corolla....haha Price for rear end, $10

We took her out and did one tire smokies till the right rear was slick :)

Car runs pretty good, with no quirks, but I think the gears we put in it are a little on the high side(speedo reads 55mph at 85 mph)

All in all, I can say its a pretty good toy for the $120 I've got invested in it so far!
