If it has, then I couldn't find it using the search engine.

Can one use the turbo tranny in a N/A car? ... My car is automatic and I want it manual, but for now, I'd like to keep the N/A engine. But just thinking in the long term, if someday I decide to get a turbo engine, I'd need another tranny again... so why not just use the turbo one right now?

The turbo engine has more power than the N/A one of course, but not THAT much in stock form... so, would it be right to assume that a N/A tranny would break if one adds some extra HP to the N/A engine somehow?

Yes you can use a (R154) turbo tranny but you need the bell housing and flywheel and presure plate make sure you get everything.

The (w58) N/A tranny is also good to arround the 450 hp range when babied. Its also a smoother shifting tranny if your going for higher power then go for it but little mods on an n/a engine arent really gona affect it.

I belive theres a guy with cresidda which has the 7mge in it whos droping in the r154.

something many people seem to miss, is that in stock form, the turbo motor only makes 30 more horsepower than the N/A, but the extra 69ft lbs of torque is where the difference is. for what it's worth, i have a w58 in my turboswapped 86.5, and i'm a bit over 300hp. it's holding fine, and shifts silky smooth. (clutchmaster's stage 3, fidanza lightweight flywheel)

there's no way you're going to bust an N/A (w58) tranny with an N/A supra. it's capable of holding 400hp, and chances are, unless you're really building your car, that it'll never come close to that.

Good info Shaeff and supradan.

lifesnotfair: (awesome name  ) If you are planning on staying N/A for a while, I would opt for the w58. As Shaeff pointed out, it's a much smoother shifting transmission, and can handle around 400hp. They are cheaper than r154's and if you decide to go turbo somewhere down the road, you have some headroom in the sense of power that can be made until it becomes unreliable.

How much power are you hoping to achieve?
<400hp + babying it = w58
>400hp + a bit of abuse = r154

Thank you, I'll go with the N/A tranny then, because with the N/A engine I wont come even close to that HP mark, and even if I decide to go turbo later on, the 400hp mark is quite more than the turbo engines' stock power... plus, if I do that I'll have the money for the tranny.. but right now I'm saving it for something else, that's why I'm keeping the car N/A for some time. But I just want to be in control of my gears!! :)

whats the point in having 400+ hp, if you can abuse it once and a while. I have a feeling ill be looking for a r154 shortly after i get my swap done.

I know what you mean but I think im gona take this w58 to its limit :evil2: we'll see how it holds up after my build up/ swap. It seems to that it can hold some power so I wont bother changing it now but i may regret it later.

oh and shaeff where did you get a lightweight flywheel for the w58???

i got it from suprasport, during the ownership transition. it took forever to get, but i'm sure that was from the transition.

i recommend Horsepower Freaks. their service is exceptional, and their staff is knowledgable.
