So, I took the transmission out to replace the flywheel bolts because they were too long for some reason, and I go to put the transmission in and it's giving me the HARDEST TIME! I have the pressure plate/clutch inside of the transmission with the t/o and fork still attached. So heres my problem: My car is on a hydraulic shop lift, and I have my tranmission on a transmission lift, and when I go to put the transmission in, I can't get the front of the transmission high enough to even slide it over the flywheel and when I jack it up straight, the shifter retainer gets stuck on the roof of the tranny tunnel. My question is, am I doing something wrong? I can't figure out why this is so hard.. How do you guys do this?

Loosen your motor mount bolts, and allow your motor to tilt back to allow you a little more clearance. I 've never done it with the motor in the car tho. I always install the two together as a whole.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but loosen up the motormounts and jack the front of the motor up and then you should be able to get the tranny on..................;)

tl;dr But you should loosen up the motor mounts a little bit and use a jack to push up the front of the engine some; this should give you some more clearance in the rear.

Too long didn't read.

I was thinking about your quandry. Have you tried possibly breaking the engine off its mounts and jacking it up for some clearance? I'm not sure but this may work.

What Boris?
Here's what I was thinking: Loosen the motormounts, and tilt the engine so you can get the transmission on easier ;)

WHy loosen he mounts?? No need. Just jack up the front of the motor a few inches. The motor is now tilting foward so jacking up the front a bit should help things out tremedously. Again.. no need to loosen motor mounts. It's not going to move around in the mount anyway when you lift it.

Come to think of it aljordan is right. I believe I got enough play out of the engine to just jack it up without taking it off the mounts. The rubber has some flex and it was enough for me.

Very carefully! LOL

P.S. I wish I had the luxury of a hydraulic lift when I pulled my tranny!
