i am getting ready to do a 1j swap in my 88 supra na and i was wondering what the common problems with the hydrofan system and if anybody has a source for parts for it. also does the 1j hydrofan run off of the the powerstering pump or does it have its own?

It's part of the waterpump. If you have all the parts, it's great to use. If not, 2J water pump and mechanical fan is great as well.

If I didn't have all the parts, I wouldn't spend a bunch of time trying to find them. I'd use a mechanical fan instead.

Everything works fantastic, until it fails or breaks.

If I had a dollar for every thread about a Supra equipped with e-fans having cooling issues, I'd have a lot of dollars.

Not everyone has bad luck with e-fans, or even a large majority, but I've seen more than enough problematic threads about them to recommend them to anybody over the stock hydraulic or mechanical fans the Supras can with from the factory. They all work great, even for high-hp applications, so why change them?

But to stay more on topic, the biggest problem with the hydraulic fan is, if you don't have all the parts, they can be hard to track down. Just depends on who has what laying around at the time that they can sell you. 2J pumps and mechanical fans can be bought all day long though if needed.

mechanical fan is the much cheaper and easier alternative to sourcing all the parts for the hydro fan

in DFW i know of only one big HP MKIV that isnt running a mechanical fan, all of them hate e-fans and will swear by a fan clutch and blade

So far I love my JDM hydro fan. No issues so far, but I have only had it since May and am now just starting to tinker with my car...

On my hydrofan the bearings went. I have a source for getting new parts from toyota japan but the hydrofan pump itself was over $900 from toyota. If you decide to go with the hydrofan though I have everything except the shroud if you want. LMK.

I really want to curse the sogi. I, a new supra owner, read their damn post about the black magic fan upgrade back in 2002. I was so excited by the possible horse power gain, i did have a NA, not a Turbo, but anyways. Well, the night i bought my Supra, the fan shroud broke onto the clutch fan, and disabled and overheated the car while i was on a date. It was massively embarrassing. So i decided that i needed to go with something better. I found that a shroud would be about 60 bucks and a black magic fan was about 150. Well, i did the great install and well, i did have more then a few problems over the years. For 8 months i had a manual switch connected that i had to manually turn on and off under the hood because the temp probe was killed. I then had the circuit breaker die. Now more recently the whole electric circuit board has died on it. So i guess i am not a big fan of them, but i for some reason am still craving one. I believe i might be just a touch insane, but it is what it is.
