I've been working on anything I could take apart since before I could walk. So naturally, I wanted a mean street machine for my first vehicle.
I spent 2 years working the watermelon fields to save up, and for my 16th birthday I bought a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am. I spent the next year of shop class working on it - porting and polishing the heads, intake, RAIV cam, swapping the rear end to a posi 3.42 setup.
38 points in 12 months with that car, once I had my license @ 18 years of age. I never caused an accident, and always thought of myself as an excellent driver.
$5000, no license for 3 years later, I learned that being able to drive fast does not make you an excellent driver. Knowing when and where is just as much a part of the equation. I've had maybe 2-3 more tickets since, but nothing like I did when I was younger.
Damn, I wish I had pics - she was bright baby blue. Ended up being rear-ended by a semi, who claimed to FHP "I didn't see him" :3d_frown:
Moral of the story - a good driver knows the limits in regards to all things - this includes speed limits
