i am near finished with my build and need to know a couple things, how should i break in my motor, with my stock turbo/injectors/ecu, but i have already done the 12v walbro mod and i have an afpr though so i guess i can compenstate to get back to stock. Or should i run my maftpro with 550's and an SC61 turbo and have that whole install out of my way? what do you think, all opinions appreciated, thanks!

i would install everything your air fuel ratio should be within specs no mater what you got.. just dont run piss out of.. dont run to rich and wash cylinders out... but everyone will have an opinun.. My self i think the very best way to break in a motor is to hit the interstate with full tank of gas tools duct tape few coat hangers hehehehe and drive at speedlimet 70-75 for 500 miles....

What I have good luck with is run your stock setup so no tuning is required (less engine run time) and get out on a long stretch and get into 3rd or 4th and accelerate from 1500rpm-4000rpm and let the engine drop back down by its own compression do this 5 times or more if you can after 50miles change your oil (The idea is to load your rings) what you dont want to do is stay and any specific RPM for very long you really want to be in different RPMS all the time, the #1 thing you are breaking in is your rings if you do not break in properly you will get blow by. here is a link Im sure everyone has seen by motoman

It really does work well.

1st ask the person who did your machine work and/or assembly. 2nd take everything that everyone else tells you with a grain of salt because if your shit fails none of these guys are going to donate a dime but talk to the more reputable members who have done many engine builds. I pm’ed the a few guys a few weeks ago about my friends rebuild and I got really good feedback and insight. I did my build years ago and I just babied my car for the first few hundred miles then I probably jumped the gun a bit and started to drive her hard and my motor is damn healthy…. Or maybe I am just lucky. Its been 2 and half years on the stock style headgasket tq’ed down to 75lbs with stock everything and 14psi for about 2 years without any really issues with the motor. Well minus my stupidity at times ….

Basically there are 2 types of breaks in. One is to baby the car a bit and keep her out of boost for 500-1200miles. The other is to start the car and rev it to 2500 or so for a few mins then drive it really hard because the train of thought is that you have a 20 mile window to seat the rings. Either way keep clean oil in her and do a compression test around the 500mile mark and 1000+mile mark. Hopefully everything checks out close to even ....

No understand but .... why shouldn't you run with it with the maft pro, 550's and sc61? I believe the maft pro has some type of base settings. I figured you would formulate your own answer to your own question because there isn't a right or wrong answer. Its your car but again why wouldn't want to install all your goodies now? Unless you want to use other stuff then switch them after the break in. Now to me that wouldn't make any sense ....... PM drjonz about the maft pro setting he is probably the best guy to talk too

Install the stuff now its 500% easier and less time consuming with the motor is out.

i was just afraid of running too rich or lean on the break in and mess my rings/pistons up because on break in i don't plan to make full throttle runs to tune and what not, \i know it would be easier time wise to install it all now, but i was just wondering if anyone knew from experience or knowledge what would be the best for the car, i DEFINATELY plan on using my goodies i'm just debating on when.

i have the wideband, i just didn't think you could tune unless you were wot, and during break in i don't plan to be wot, and i don't want to run rich(which i recall the base settings are) because i'll get ring wash correct?

when i rebuilt my eclipse, i didnt just jump right onto the interstate... i drove it around town, going in and out of boost, and i was even going up to 14psi on a fresh motor... i think the car had been on the highway once or twice... but it was taken to "highway speeds" regularly... it passed smog with 100% and had no blow by...

and i switched to synthetic oil after 150ish miles... maybe even less. Castrol Syntec 10w-30
so dont let everybody say you CANT switch too soon....

The only problem with switching soon, is you risk delaying the seating of the rings. Plus, it's a waste...you should be changing oil a few times in the 1st 1500 miles, don't want to dump expensive syn oil.

If the motor is brand new (never been started or has only run for a few seconds) don't forget to disconnect power to coils and crank it over a few times to build some oil pressure and get some oil to the top of the engine. It's really important for newly fitted moving parts.

I know more guys who in the excitement of starting their new motor forgot or skipped doing this, and fucked up their new motor as a result.

And don't run synthetic oil until you've got a couple of thousand miles on the motor.:icon_bigg

Oh...whatever you do don't run lean on the A/F's, when in doubt, error on the rich side.
