Are you talking about the SOGI mod, perhaps? It's better just to buy a REAL STS.

I think he is.

To answer Suprafanatic, I haven't done it but it sounds super gay. No longer feeling like I'm rowing a boat would be nice, but I realize the objective is to have a shorter throw between gears, not just having a shorter shifter. A combination of both would be awesome, though.

Speaking of which, I've heard the C's only has a shorter throw and isn't much shorter than the OEM shifter?

What I done is the black part the top you can twices it untel the seal break and just have to put an aftermarket shift nob on it. The black part the I'm talking about is that long piece then the bottom it bear streal.

Remove it, place one end in a vise and use a vise grips on the other end and twist back and forth and pull, untell the black rubber stuff brakes away. Then just clean up the the shortened shaft with sand paper( to remove the small amount of black rubber stuff still on it)

Thats how i did it at least. Good luck

i'm guessing this is what u are looking for...keep in mind that isn't a real short shifter though. i did this mod before on a previous car and in the end i wasn't really happy w/it. sure at first it felt better as far as where my arm sat, but it was just too notchy in the end. i wouldn't recommend it. try saving up and getting a real short shifter. i have heard the c's short shifter isn't much different in height from stock if at all. i have heard good things about the Jim King V2 short shifters. u will get the performance w/either though the ladder mentioned will give u the comfort u might be seeking too.

I dont think id want to do it as i like to have a shift knob that screws on rather than one that just sits there and is held on my set screws.
Also im pretty sure that big metal piece you take off is a counterweight so you get a more positive shift.

i've driven real short throw shifters, and i've driven my car with the SOGI mod.

i like the sogi mod the best. it's all about personal preference, reall. ;) also, i cut/ threaded mine for the stock shift knob.

all very interesting... and the foamy problem is being fixed ;) its at the shop geting a new head gasket, arps and quite afew other things replaced here and there...

So about the shortened shifter,, right now im really just looking for a shorter shifter, not really a shorter throw. mainly for looks, i had a celica 5 speed and on it i was able to just cut the stick cause it was just one metal piece, and i loved it.. but you guys are saying take out the shifter and just twist till the Black part all comes off? i'v heard someone talking about that say it made it way to short, is that true? aslo what do you guys mean by it feels notchier?
