Can someone tell me how to adjust the base timing on a 1j? I'm a few degrees off on my base timing and was wondering how to get it back to 10*? The mkiv TSRM was no help at all and search didnt come up with anything for me. Are the CPS's adjustable on the 1j like the 7m?

I'll take a stab at this since no one else will...lol

I too had this question...and unfortunately, you're not gonna like the answer...

if your timing is off, then your belt is off a tooth or something.

The 1JZ (and a lot of other newer engines) does not have adjustable base timing. the computer controls ignition timing and is only concerned with that. There is no manual way to change base timing. so you've probably got something physically off a bit if your timing is wrong.

Thanks devil, I had a feeling that was the answer. It is possible my reading was a little off because my car may not have been all the way warmed up but I'll have to go try again. I just can't figure out why my EGT's climb so fast on short 4th and 5th gear pulls because my A/F's were sub 10:1 on the dyno.

No codes and I checked the marks at 0* and they were pointed straight up to the white lines. Car runs fine except in 4th and 5th doing a pull the EGT's shoot up pretty quick. I do have my probe only about 1.5" from the exhaust ports but when it reaches 1550*F that quick I have to think something else is going wrong. I am still on stock FMIC, would it heatsoak that fast and cause high EGT's?

I do not know much about that motor, but for giggles I would suggest IJ's trick of confirming that the balancer is at true zero.

Grab some vacc hose about 150mm long pull #1 plug and drop the hose in on top of the piston.

Turn the crank and watch the hose rise, it'll stop just before it heads back down this is true TDC now compare this with what the marks on the balancer say.

7m's tend to slip or be off I hear (no clue on yours?), but it is always good to start with the basics.

Edit: Any cats on your car?

at least yours isn't off 16 degrees when all the marks line up and the cam/crank sensor's are within spec.

if its missing at hard 4th and 5th gear pulls you should check your spark plugs and the gap they have. you may be blowing out the spark . set the gap small. like .35 or even .30.

It doesn't miss, the EGT's are high.

And as for the cat, it has a hollow one, but I do run a silencer. You think this would cause EGT temps to rise that much faster?
