A couple of years ago it ranged from $1600 to $2300 depending on the shop and what they thought they might run into. It cost me $750, including a few necessary tools. If you can get your hands on a garage for a couple of weeks (just in case it takes a little longer for your first go), this is definitely the only way to go, just like selfinfliction said. :)

Do it yourself. Get a few buddies to help you out when you start getting pissed off cause a nut/bolt wont come off. Put everything in zip top baggies and label them all. It is not a hard job at all, it is just time consuming. Get the head cleaned/checked for warpage. And use the search feature to look for answers. If you do it yourself, you will gain good knowledge about your car. Plus, its almost like a rite of passage lol.

Depends on your location, and what the hourly shop rate is. Every shop is different.

Typically, I could probably do it for $1500 with all new parts(h.g. kit, oil pump seal, w.p., timing belt, hoses, radiator sent out to be checked and cleaned/repaired or replaced as necessary, t.stat., etc.), head machine work(including valve job), and labor. Getting the block decked will add quite a bit to the price(I'd have to pull the block, disassemble it, get it decked, put it all back together, etc.).
