how many people out there are running stock head gaskets on there set ups? and how many lbs of boost and managment. Just curious to see what a stock head gasket can take with proper tq arp studs and some kind of permatex spray for extra stickiness? anyone running alot of boost on upgrades? i read somewhere the completely stock motor can take 400? this is a curiousity question

with a proper tune i think its acceptable to think the stocker will be ok. remember its not really pressure that blows hgs its the improper torque specs from toyota and then aslo detonation.

however why push it? mhgs arent that expensive and with the proper hardware its bulletproof out to the limits of the bottom end.

Yeah i dunno, i have a cometic hg here and a felpro, a decked good head and a block in the car that SEEMS ok. The car runs on a 60trim t4 set up @ 20 lbs, my last stocker hg didnt even blow bad, car didnt even smoke or anything, my radiator went and blew 2 water jackets out, i only knew the over heat damaged the head because when i put a aluminum radiator in i was getting air pockets like nuts, and it turned out to be exaust gases, it didnt blow between cylinders or anything. I just want to do everything as proper as i can with the little time and money that i have... pretty depressing if you ask me...

Bit of a contradiction there!

If you want to do things properly, you'll need to pull the block and deck it, then use the cometic (as long as the head and block are 50RA or finer) with ARP hardware. If you don't/can't deck it, and you still want to do things properly, go with Toyota OEM HG, and ARP hardware.

Only use a sealant such as brake quiet on a used metal headgasket, you want all the viton rubber coating that comes on it new to be completely cleaned off. Do not use it on a new MHG or a composite HG!

Check out Suprahero's car. He's run 405 whp on a stock HG with ARP's for a while now, and he's planning on making a 6 hour trip to Louisville with it this weekend for another few dyno pulls. IDK what he's boosted, but 405 is pretty damn good power on a stocker.

He's running 12.5 psi on a Garrett to4e...he has some vids posted of his latest dyno runs. That's is damn good...Jay's a smart man. Running over 14 psi on a composite gasket is hitting it's limit...leave a little fudge factor and it will last a long time. The key is proper torque on the ARP hardware.

so the sticky permatex coper gasket spray is a bad idea on composite? i know on metals your not supposed to use anything. and i know what the "proper" way to do it is, what i meant was i want to be able to do it as proper as i can the way it is now, i dont have the time or the money to pull the motor. i know someone who was boosted 24 on a 60trim ct24 stock hg good tq and that copper spray so i dunno, im open to all pointers and idea's like i said before it was on 20lbs on a 60 trim before stock hg and it didnt blow due to boost problems it blew because of a stupid over heat problem, the damn radiator blew... but i was driving on that set up and boosting for a long time now, i dunno, shit sucks real bad

IMO the stock HG would be fine as long as it's torqued down propperly (head studs), but i'd get several other oppinions on that

edit: apparently 14 psi is the max? :D

You can use the copper spray on a composite HG...it's a NEW metal HG you do not want to use any kind of sealer on. If you use ARP hardware torqued to the ARP spec sheet that comes with it, you will be able to run 14 psi all day with no problem. Much over that though and you're asking to blow it ;)

When i replaced my head gasket, everyone on here said that they saw no problem with putting Brake Quiet on a Toyota Head gasket...I machined the head, installed a Toyota OEM hg, sprayed with the Blue Brake Quiet, with ARP studs torqued to 80ft/lbs, then retorqued to 87ft/lbs after a while, and it has been fine for about a year and ~4500miles.

Oh, and I am on a stock CT-26, boosting no more than 8psi.

<---Never been in favor of putting anything on any new headgasket, unless the manufacturer says to put something on it.

OEM headgasket and 58 lb/ft, running about 8-9 PSI. Better to lose a headgasket than the engine. Something has to give.

so is that 14 psi with any turbo? or just the stock ct 26?

It's a rule of thumb...some guys have run a stock HG to 16-18 psi (with a good tune) and had it hold, but this is the exception. Everyone I know that has kept the boost down in the 12-14 psi range has done fine...that is also on a good tune and a re-build done right.

Concerning the spray sealer: The stock HG is rough compared to a MHG. The sealer will help to fill this roughness and a head/block deck that is machined smooth, but not up to MHG standards.

Sealer on a new MHG...different story. All MHG's come from the factory with a Vitron (or similar) coating...it's purpose is the same...fill any small imperfections in the machining of the head/block. The big difference is a MHG will not give and will not tolerate unevenness.

Using a spray sealer on a MHG is not a good idea...it destroys the factory coating. Using a spray sealer on an used MHG on a composite gasket is a personal choice. From what I've seen, it seems to work well.

i really appreciate all the feed back guys, it is all useful info for the stock hg. i think the 14psi rule it a little general though, id say a set standard of hp would be more reasonable to say of like maybe 400? im just saying i use to drive my car on 20 no problems, blew because of my dumbass.

i was re-reading the thread and seeing if i missed any information, is it ok or not to use copper gasket spray on a NEW COMPOSITE hg, i know its absolutely not ok to use it on a NEW METAL
