hey ya'll

i'm trying to find out how much amperage the fusebox & starter motor draw on cranking

so here's the low down

relocated battery to boot, installed splitter box with 100amp fuses, ran cable to front of car, want to install another splitter box but this one only holds 60amp fuses which i'm intending to run the starter and the fuse box power wires

power cable is 4gauge to front splitter box then out to 2x 8gauge for starter & fuse box

when i crank the engine will i blow the 60amp fuses? and will the wiring be suitable?

Thanks :D

1. Yeah, you will blow the fuse. At 11.5 volts our starters can pull as much as 121+ Amps.

2. I would also get a larger set of wires. 8-gauge is a bit small for a starter. And 4-gauge is a bit small for a run all the way back to the boot.

You could get away with 4-gauge run all the way, and not have any problems. But personally I would go with 2-gauge in place of the 4-gauge and 4-gauge in place of the 8-gauge, it is a bit over kill, but that’s just me.

Hope this helps. ;)

I make my own jumper cables, and I use that welding cable. Makes jump starting a dead car easy. You hook them up and the dead car turns over like it had a fresh battery.

I got tired of using cheap travel jump cables and having to wait 5 min before the dead car had enough juice to turn over.

I come from a land down under
I used to run the - cable from the battery to the chassis then a short cable at the front across to the motor and ended up running 2x 500+ CCA batteries in my Z to overcome the V drop!

In the Supra with a single optima yellow there is very minimal V drop running the welding cables all the way up to the front! :)

If I could buy some decent aligator clamps I'd make a set of jumpers that's a great idea! (my bought ones in both cars are crap)

yeah, I suggest getting 2 "Ought" welding cable and going that route.
4 gauge cannot handle a 7m starter too well. I ran 4 4guages to keep the wires from heating up.

No problem, we ran it just like you suggested in my dad's car a few years back and it works great!

Wow - I had no idea that the starter pulls that many amps. I have a 1G which is the 2litre supra motor - I'm assuming that altho smaller, it will still pull over 100amp?

Did VAT test in class today... 128 amps @ 10.8 volts while cranking. Also did hydrometer test on battery and found out all 6 cells are below acceptable numbers for specific gravity. Time for a new battery!!

haha i know... Its okay, if it shall breaketh, Thou shalt upgradeth. Therefore I'm now considering optima+relocation to hatch via Welding cables.

A smart choice indeed Ryan.
It seems I picked the right time to rebuild my car.
So many great ideas have been pointed out in the recent past that I would have not done and been pissed about after the fact.
Now just to remember them all.... :D
