How free does the crank have to spin?

Hey all,
I just installed my crank, the first time i tightened the caps down, and it didn't turn, so I was like " hmmm, f&ck, I am f&cked!". I took all the studs out, and re did it, and now it turns when I have it all properly toequed down, but the crank won't spin super well. I need to use my arms to turn it, I can't really give it a good spin and watch it turn. Is this bad? Should it spin really free like it's on ballbearings or something? I'm just curious because I guess I'l find out when it blows up my engine if it's wrong . Any comments welcome

Ummm....you have oil or assembly lube in the bearings right?

Bascially, if I recall correctly, it is not going to spin very freely. I don't remember spinning mine then stepping back and watching it spin for a while.

However, you should be able to spin it very easily. There really shouldn't be any resistance.

Did you check your bearing clearances?

A crankshaft spinning freely ??? eh, not sure its suppose to, there is suppose to be some resistance, if there is no resistance, that means your caps that go over the crank are too loose, thus having play probably, and with your pistons hamering down at 5k rpm, you dont want play ;). The resistance will be taken care of by the oil passages when it will run.

I dont garanti you 100% what kind of force it should take to turn a crank, but if i remember well...it should not run freely like a turbo wheel. Id call rebuild shops..lots of em..make sure you get it right, its a mistake you dont wanna rely on people answering on forums...go straight to professionnals..

Good luck

Let me rephrase. There should be resistance, but when turning the crack, with no pistons, it should be fairly easy to spin, but it won't spin, like said above, like a turbo wheel.

did you tap the ends of the crank back and fourth to seat the thrust washer like you should? We had that problem on my buddy's 300zx. It had a few hard spots in the rotation until we did that. The hard spots where so hard that you had to stick the balancer on and turn it with both hands to make the crank turn.

shit! I'l do that taping thing nexttime Iwork on it! I never knew, as I don't recal it saying so in the tsrm. I re-did my main cap bolts, so now it spins properly, as before it didn't spin at all :icon_neut so I'l see if that does anything to the rotation. It seems fine now. The way I think about it, if this kills my engine, i'l tear it out, sell the custom work I'm gona do, then buy a 1jz ahahaa! Lets hope it never comes to that tho.

oh man.

If you TRIED to move your crank while it would not move...I would make sure the bearing surface and the crank surface is still smooth and free of metal shavings...that could kill you!

Did you use engine assymbly lube?

I.E: Mine spun freely when I put it together....

nah, mine's fine. I'm a pro and I know :x:
I took 2 bearings off and they were still fine, so when I re-did it it turns well, and I used some motomaster grease on all bearings and turning surfaces. Yesterday I put on the rear crank seal, and today I got it on my engine stand. I have to get my pistons ringed at the shop so I can drop them in, btw they are JE's so I hope they do well. I am waiting on bolts for my front plate, sent to me from Texas thanks to Jeff at champion. Once they arrive and front plate is on and oil pump is on, oil pan goes on and bottom is done :biggrinbo
Anyway, thanks for the help with my crank issues. I'm broke now, so I can't even afford my turbos or head rebuild tools or crap. That is the life of a supra owner I guess.
