i got home just now hopeing to do some work on the car and when i went to take my key out the key will turn the car off and go into the acc position and ususally i just have to press the key release button to get it all the way out. well i push it and jack shit happens. i couldnt turn the key all they way off.

then i went to disocnnect my battery before i pulled the sob appart and after disconnecting my battery, i push the release button and out comes the key.

is the key release button electric or is there something in there that electronically locks hte key in the acc position... im baffled, pulling it appart isnt going to help me cus its electrical.

any help would be awsome, dont want to buy a new ignition switch.

your profile says you have an auto, I was wondering if maybe this had something to do with being fully in park? But that's all I got for ya.., sorry..

Don't feel bad, my 84 surpa was an auto and I had charging problems all the time. Once I thought my battery was dead, I tried to jump it for an hour and still nothing... Then my friend says, dude are you in Drive??? I felt like the biggest idiot... and I am :)

I have seen it on newer cars, but i did not know if toyota used it on ours. There is a neutral safty switch and it may send or not send a signal to the release mechanism?

Ian: My manual won't start unless the clutch is depressed.. but I don't think that ties into my key release?

I wonder what year they started using it?

well i tried it, the key wont release in any position other than park, i put it in neutral and tried it but the key wouldnt budge again, only in park. seamed bizzarre cus i was in park the first time and no dice, i know my moms 89 truck has it.

where does it read it though? the gear selector i need to find it cus i dont want to drive to work and end up not being able to take my key out of the ignition.

Mine has always worked this way. I believe it to be "working as designed".

key will not be able to come out unless the shifter is in P. SOmtimes of you take the key out and lock the steering wheel and put the key back in it wont turn, simply tunr the wheel left or right while turning the key and it should unlock for yah.

Same goes for getting the key out if its locked, turn the wheel either way and turn the key and it should come out. Check that sensor for the shifter too :)
