What do you do to be sure you keep your shop organized?

Is there something you do each time to ensure your always organized and neat?

Any tips on keeping your things in order and easily found when needed?

And particular bin/shelf/peg board system you find particularly helpful in your system that you have come across?

I find it a constant fight to keep space open, yet tools handy, yet easy to find and not have myself spending more time organizing than actually working on the project at hand no matter if it is a car or whatever.

There's got to be a better way!.......

1st step get a full height tool box. get one with lots of drawers, but make sure there are a few deep drawers for larger items. also, cheap shelving units to store parts on, rather than leeping them in boxes.

i borrowed a labelmaker as well, labelled all the drawers so tools are easy to find (and it also makes it easier if people are helping you/passing you tools)

Me, I dont have a shop, or even a carport for that matter, I work on the pavement wether its 1000 degrees or covered with an inch of ice. I lug all me tools into the house and pile them up wherever they fit. I wish i had a messy garage lol.

Full size tool box + organizers. Socket organizers, wrench holders, plier racks, etc. They really are a life saver. The other crucial part...PUT STUFF AWAY. Even if you're using it, you'll end up spending less time putting it back in the rack and pulling it out again than looking for it that one time you left the socket on the bolt of your intake manifold. Makes it easy for organized clean up too. You see a hole in your organizer, you make sure you fill it before you leave. Cuts down on rogue tools that make disappearances for months at a time.

I come from a land down under
A place for everything and everything in it's place.

ie: Clear the tools away at the end of each workday it only takes a few minutes and you know exactly where they are the next day.

All great idea's. Most that I follow. Throw/sell all junk. Alot of people don't need more room, if organized. Do you really want to waste time selling a used ball joint for 10 dollars? After the time it takes to post, Pm's back and forth, Packing, tape, a trip to the post office. You now made a whopping -2 dollars on your sale. Thats if the buyer does'nt flake out. Chuck that junk, if it has no real value. Having spare parts is great to a point.
