How do I stop the water from getting into my spare?

I know it's a common problem to have the spare-tyre place rusted up and screwed up. I've known some supra owners who have had to rebuild in some weird material that bit of their cars.

My car is not like that - YET. But everytime some rain falls on my car, the next day I gotta spend some minutes cleaning that up. Luckily it has two drain things, so I remove at least one, and let the water fall from there. Then I dry it all up AND I dry my spare tyre too.. and place it all back together. I also hate the fact that some water stays inside the hatch part, and after I lift the hatch, some drops fall from there, but sometimes it takes it about a minute to fall.

Is there a way to fix this? I think it's a bad design there... the water that runs between the sides of the hatch, it has nowhere to go! Where does it go? Damn, the FC I used to own had two holes there, so the water goes down immediately =P ... Supras suck. *cough* No, I'm joking. How do I fix it? I need to start fixing stuff before I get so mad at the car that I end up beating it with a stick.

or the wiper hole, or the trim at the back of the rear glass. :(

My hatch seal looks fine.

I swapped my 86-88 tails to 89-92, and I used no sillicone. Maybe that's not helping.... ?

I don't know about the silicones of today but back in the day when i was still in my early 70's..lol.. I was told to not use silicone on a car body as it is known to promote rust..hth..

I agree. Had the same problem that id lift up the hatch and water would pour down. I think it is the bottom trim on the rear window or the seal between the glass and hatch.

..And does silicone really bring on rust?

i hope silicone doesnt bring on rust... as my new tail light seals are coated with a nice goopy layer of it. :) and let me tell you, there are NO leaks from my tails. :)

i'm not sure if this could cause it, but it does in my case.... my wheel wells are pretty rusted and have large holes on each side.... when i got my body work done i'll have them cut it out and patch it up, but in the meantime when it rains, the tires spin up all kinds of water, gravel and junk into my hatch, so i try not to drive it in the rain.

if you can't find the leak, maybe try taking the panels off and look for holes in the wheel wells?

born2drv, i had that same problem. i riveted new metal into place for the time being, (that time is until i get my tig welder;)), and i used thick black "cab sealer" silicone on the joints to prevent any water entry. it's working very well so far. i used a ballpene hammer to form-fit the metal i put in. after it was painted black (body color), it looked like it was supposed to be there.

and from underneath, you cant tell it's there at all. :)

ya i gotta do something about it, not sure what yet because i don't have a riveter or welder (or the skill to use one) :) but i have a small grinder, I think I'm going to try to cut and grind out all the rusted parts and hammer a piece of sheet metal to fit for now too... maybe i'll go to home depot and see what a riveter costs and give it a try :)

Check that your taillight lenses are tight against the black trim, mine were gaping open up to an 1/8 all along the top. I just filled it in with black silicon.
Like everyone else said, seals seals seals, that's what they're for.

If you want to get fancy you could put a vacume hose (like the one you use to clean carpets) in one of your windows, seal it up as best you can and turn that sucker on to create a lower pressure inside. Spray the outside of the car in the "problem" areas, you'll really notice where the leaks are coming from then.

If I had a water leak problem inside like you do. I would strip out the hatch. Wet carpet=rust. It'll eat that shit out quick once it starts. All you can really do is keep an eye out on the hatch seal, the bottom one.

Yep while my car still ran, i ended up tearing out the rear trim and spare just to make getting the water out easier. Plus I didnt think i should have to dry my carpet and Toyota brand plywood every weekend. It also helped me figure out where my leak was.
