How do I determine what size Turbo I need?

I just got an offer from some guys I know that would get me a Garrett Turbo of my choice in exchange for my building them a web page (they've got a deal going with Garrett to get free turbos, the bastards!). The problem is, I don't know how to determine what size turbo I want/need. I've got an '88 turbo, and (once I rebuild the engine) I want to be putting 500 - 550 ponies to the ground. I know there's a lot more to building an engine than just slapping a turbo on, but I'll need to tell them soon which I want or I might lose the deal. So how to I take this info and use it to find the turbo I need?

Any and all input will be much appreciated.
Thanks!

GT42r. overkill.

GT40r at most.

GT42r will become a huge lag monster and if at 6500 rpm a teeny tiny 2000 rpm window of power. Before that RPM wndow, slower than a sunday night at a fully clothed titah bar.

pffffffft. Get a GT42R, and i'll trade you my GT4088 and i'll even have it rebuilt

pfft nothing!!

I have a GT42 and more specifically a GT42RS (the big sucker). 1.01 A/R

Things don't happen until 5000 rpm. ;) and this is with 3.2L of loving pushing it.

With the right turbine housing, the GT35R will meet your goals very well and will be very livable on the road.

A 7M would need a crazy build-up to make good use of the GT42R. Keep in mind Ric is driving a 1J and Germans have a habit of biting off more than they can chew.

I chose the GT4088R thinking it is the best bigger turbo (from Garrett at least) for the 7M but it was a hard choice over the GT35R which is probably the best all around turbo for the 7M from Garrett.

Free? That's easy.

GT42R.

A 35R is not enough for 500whp on pump gas.

Where, exactly, did you see him say he wanted to make that power on pump gas?

Why would you recommend someone to buy a GT42R just to make 500hp?

Because with a GT42R you can make 500hp @ 18psi no issues. A gt4094 is 68mm, only a hair smaller then the 42, and that would do it too.

Again, where exactly did he say he needed to make 500-550 on pump gas? He NEVER said anything about making that power on pump gas and a GT42r is overkill to have an hp goal of 500-550.

I'm not going to get into this with you today, so carry on.

Because it's not going to make power until VERY late in the RPM. DUH.

If everyone used your logic, we would all be running around with GT42 and GT47 turbos that would be useless until 5000+RPM. You think this guy wants to wait til 5000 just to start making power?

Why not? Everyone else in the MKIV world does, and they seem to have no problems roasting everything on the road. 3 liter 2JZGTE's with GT4788's are running low 9s all day long without the laughing gas. Even if you have a GT35R, you still won't make power til 4500. Whats another 500rpms to get 100 more whp on pump gas?

If you don't like turbo lag, stop playing with 2.5 and 3 liter motors. Your installing a blitz twin kit thats going to make less WHP and lag worse then my 4088

.....and the 40R spools at 4,000.

Ric, the two turbos may seem identical to you, but, to me at least, sacrificing 500rpm to spool for an extra 50hp was a significant tradeoff.
