Why the 6 speed transmission? It will not give you better milage, and unless you are shooting for over 800whp+ It will not have an advantage over any r154.

bragging rights..

I too used to want the 6 speed, until I further researched it, and realize there arent any real advantages to the R154, atleast in a MKIII

i wanted a 6speed too until i found out what a pain it is to do it. the r-154 will be fine. all 6th gear is is an overdrive gear if my memory serves right. why not do a 1.5jz?

I would just do a JZA70 1JZ swap with 5speed R154 to the MA70.

The 2JZ is terrible first swap for your car.

Reasoning this is simple its cheap and bolt ons with stock twins could get you ~350WHP
Y pipe delted cat 3" exhaust all the way through upgraded FMIC underdrive pullys light weight flywheel/clutch/1piece drive shaft/rims walbro cams ~350 is an easy target for the 1JZ.

With a single upgrade on the 1JZ 6-700WHP is simple to achive.

The only downside is legaly smogging a 1jz in a very smog controlled state or county.
but you will find out it is just as hard to do with a 2JZ also because no JDM head/motor will pass smog visual inspection so you need to buy a USDM 2JZGTE & all the smog equipment and factory parts must be on it then you must get it BAR inspected so for a BPU stock 2JZGTE you will probley pay a good 7-10K for all the parts and labor / time to get a legal 2JZ setup that will pass smog and get a BAR plate to mount to the firewall.

2JZGTE parts are expensive have the same base hp roughly and you must buy a crap load of 1JZ parts to fit the 2JZ into the MKIII. 2jz is also a wiring nightmare.

The only way to use the 6 speed correctly in a MKIII is to swap the rear diff to the 9" MKIV rear end or change the gearing the factor 8" custom 320-330 rear end gear ratio.
or even find the extremely rare MKIII rear end less then 10 ever made the 3.20 mkiii rear end only came in the group A race supra the one toyota used in thier compatition race setup.

Then you must pay jawsgear ~500 for a custom balanced aluminum 1 piece drive shaft.

EE1.3, there are other gears that fit our housing that are low enough to use with a getrag.
Why do people say this jawsgear tried to use the 4runner diff parts on supraforums and had trouble doing this can you provide people with the source and how much the cost and are they a direct bolt on fit? whats the cost ? I have a 1997 4runner 4x4 with the electronic locking rear differential could i put the electronic lockers & the ring gears in the supra?

The tranny alone is going to cost you about as much as a stock 2jz. 1jz = cheaper and easier to put in.
2jz = more expensive and a tab bit more difficult.

Basically it comes down to money, time, and patients.

I read that it just haves the toyota axle codes

While looking other places though I saw a 3.25 TRD that went to a MKIII I wonder if its the group A diff.

If you build a powerfull 2JZGTE im sure you would want a 9" still.

Yep

Group A diff is 3.25 :icon_bigg

we've gone over this in other threads, but yes basically a V160 isn't gonna mean anything unless you're hell bent on saying you have a getrag. bulletproof? pretty much, but then again so is the R154 and at the level you'd go to see the difference in holding capacities, generally speaking most of the cars I see go sequential or auto anyways.

oh and that basterd is expensive.

(And the 2J vs. 1J swap is always hilarious because most people that do the 2J swaps to be "better" or "faster" or "produce more power" almost never end up going past around 550whp +/- which can easily be achieved by the 1J. [Maybe my view is too microcosmic though.. if thats the case forgive me] Are there exceptions, of course but the baseline argument for the mk3 owner is just that IMO. So for the extra money you paid for the 2J swap I dare say its marginal for a great percentage of owners.)
