I was wondering if it was quite common for the timing case gasket to leak? I believe I have an issue with mine and was wondering if this was a common issue?

Also any information you can give about changing that particular gasket?

Thanks So Much

Not that common at all... first off, it's a timing belt, and it's supposed to be dry. So if there is oil in there, it's coming from another seal.... cams, oil pump drive shaft, front main are all possibilities.

I bet when the top end was rebuilt they reused the front cam seals causing it to leak down the front end of the engine, leaking from the bottom timing case.

it isn't leaking oil at all. It is leaking water. On the passenger side the gasket has 2 water passages to the cylinder block directly behind the water pump. This is where I believe it is leaking from.

DOH!

Check the 90 degree hose first they bake in there and get brittle, might be from the water neck but it's not a common leak.

3 possible spots it might be leaking>>

The center blue circle is where we believe it is leaking from. Any suggestions? :(

Major PITA to fix then :(

i second that. if its a lose you could live thats fine like top up the antifreeze every few weeks but if you have to top it off every few days then good luck replaving that gasket... its a major pain in the Di(k

Thanks for the info! Much Appreciated! Would it not be easier to just remove the timing cover to get to that Hardpipe?

i would try the 90 degree hose and the middle blue circled one in the picture that IJ posted up. those are easier and cheaper to DIY first before you move to the next problem

I'd start by changing the 90* hose. That hose likes to get pin holes and spray all over making it look like its something else. Plus it's cheap and easier to replace.

To change that you either have to pull the head to get the rear timing cover out. Or pull the motor to get the hard pipe out.

I'd still start with the 90* hose.

The Hardpipe wraps around the block and is almost impossible to get out without pulling the exhaust manifold :(
(guess which dodery old fool assembled an engine and forgot to install it in order once :nono: )

Timing cover isn't too much in the way, worst case scenario is if the Timing case to block gasket is leaking (passages behind the waterpump).

I'd rule out the easy to get to bits first Misty.

Thanks For all the information. I have eliminated the 90 degree hose issue.....also the hard pipe.... so it is in the process now of the big gasket. Uggghhh I just wanna drive my car LOL
