Compression test it , its a guage with a fitting on it u plug into where your sparkplugs go , test each cylnder n write down what each cylnder psi level is , make sure u have some1 with u , it makes it a little easier ! if your in the 160 to 170 psi level your good if under 145psi its startin to lose compression, witch usualy is the rings! .late.

Do you feel like spy hunter dumping out a smoke screen at full throttle? If you do, most likely it's your rings......:bigthumb:

err yeah um.....just do it the way the TSRM says.

there are also methods to determine if the rings, or valve seals are bad.

lets say you havelow compression on one cylinder, put an ounce of oil in the cylinder and test it again, if the compression rose, its the rings, if it stayed the same, its the valves.

Forgot about a cracked piston or ringlands, and BHG. To actually figure out what is going on you need a leakdown tester. It forces air into each cylinder and tells you the percentage of leakdown you have in that cylinder. Then you listen to where the air is escaping. If it is escaping through the oil dipstick or valve cover breather it is most likely piston rings or a cracked piston. If it is leaking out the intake or exhaust ports on the head it is a valve. If there are bubbles coming up in your coolant overflow tank or bubbles coming to the top of your radiator it is most likely a bad headgasket. To test for a BHG you can also use a tool that tests for combustion gases in the coolant system with a special dye. You open the radiator cap, stick in the tool that looks like a turkey baster with the fluid inside of it. If the blue fluid turns yellow while the car is running then you have exhaust gases present in your cooling system and have the dreaded BHG.

also, one great way to tell if you have a BHG (aside from the oil/water milkshake that clogs your PCV line and collects under the oil cap (my personal favorite..)) is to pressure test your cooling system.

if it wont hold pressure, and you see no leaks on the floor or anywhere else, theres a good chance you have a BHG!!!!
