How are these people running our country?

Your Own Personal Internet
The Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked 11 to 11 on an amendment inserting some very basic net neutrality provisions into a moving telecommunications bill. The provisions didn't prohibit an ISP from handling VOIP faster than emails, but would have made it illegal to handle its own VOIP packets faster than a competitor's.
Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explained why he voted against the amendment and gave an amazing primer on how the internet works.
Senator Ted Stevens said:
There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service is now going to go through the internet* and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes.

We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discrimnate against those people [¿]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [¿]

They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.

It's a series of tubes.

And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that?

Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people.

[¿]

Now I think these people are arguing whether they should be able to dump all that stuff on the internet ought to consider if they should develop a system themselves.

Maybe there is a place for a commercial net but it's not using what consumers use every day.

It's not using the messaging service that is essential to small businesses, to our operation of families.

The whole concept is that we should not go into this until someone shows that there is something that has been done that really is a viloation of net neutraility that hits you and me.

It has an Mp3 of him saying all this, its pretty sad. I'm still baffeled at how ignorant this man is, and he is running our country. Even worse is how informed he is. If he is making judgements on how he beleives an issue is like this one, I'm wondering how much "info" he has and how accurate it is when he passes judgement on other issues which can be far more important.

Think about how stupid the "average guy" is. Realize then that 1/2 the people out there are even dumber than he is.

In this country you get the government you ask for.

As long as stupid people just keep voting for stupid and/or evil politicians (Democrats or Republicans 0 they are equally screwed up in one way or another) it's not going to change.

If you don't like what you see, give someone else a chance...

If you vote for either of the two major parties, you have no right to bitch, because they have both proven time and time again they are going to screw you over, one way or the other.

I havent really been given a chance, im only 20, and speak my mind quite often even if I'm wrong, people will correct me and thats that.
point being is I didnt vote for this dipshit. I've been able to vote for 2 years now, so as you can see I havent had a chance to use my right fully yet, but like i said I do speak out amongst the popular beleive.

and Yes I'm totally for a 3rd party hell throw in 4 or five parties, the more people running the better chance we have of picking the correct person for the job.

Funny, people pay to make their car faster, but think the internet should be free.

hmm, why do I get the feeling you also are lost.
do you know what net neutrality is?
Read up on it and then come back and tell me why I made this post.
It has nothing to do with the internet being free, because I will gladly pay $30 a month for cable/DSL/Fiber ect.

Haha, when I saw the thread title, I already wondered how long it would take you to chime in ;)
But your statement was rather disappointing, I was hoping for something more profound.
1. As D34DC311 stated, net neutrality doesn't have anything to do with free internet access.
2. Even if it did, no one here ever said anything pro or con net neutrality, only made fun of the senator's uneducated statements.

BTW I'm suprised the senator didn't reveal that it was actually him who invented two or three internets - maybe he will in another interview :D

Nick M, here ya go: this is pretty much a summary of what the tele companies are doing to america.
they are trying to force Net nuetrality out the door, so they can block competitor sites.
Say SM is hosted on an AT&T back bone, and your on a Verizon back bone, they can block SM from you leagally.
how you like them apples?

http://www.newnetworks.com/ShortSCANDALSummary.htm

This is what I've been watching since 2001, and waiting for. I've lived in my same area for over 14 years now, and we still dont have cable or DSL.
Bellsouth/verizon/At&t/comcast/ ect can all burn in hell.
They market where they want to market too.

Of course what really is going on is, leftist commies are brain washing those that want everybody to pay equal. If you are not using the service, you will still pay. So of course you want that.

What you want is the interent to be like the mail system.

I'd say vote libertarian, but that shit got me de-modded.
Talk about hypocrisy. This issue should be a libertarian stronghold.

It said that any content provider must be awarded bandwidth "with equivalent or better capability than the provider extends to itself or affiliated parties, and without the imposition of any charge." That would likely prohibit any plans by Verizon or other former Bell companies to offer their own video services that would be given priority over other traffic (video is bandwidth-intensive and intolerant of network delays).

What a horrible idea. That is like saying Suprasport can not sell the bigger turbo for more money than the smaller one.

All the people that bitch about Bill Gates, and you support his legislation to control it. Amazing.

It is Nick, I think you missed out on the day they handed out sarcasam detection. LOL.

And yes, I do agree, it's a thoroughly preposterous law on so many levels I can't believe anyone attempts to take it seriously.

The market is perfectly capable of dictating what we'll accept. If my provider blocks access to places I want to go, I get another provider, I don't call my congressman...

Everyone needs to stop being sheep -- when dealing with business, vote with your wallet.

Eh, maybe. I know the internet hides it often. As I have laid it on thick, and people thought I was serious too.
