I currently have a Denon AVR-887 receiver. I'm saving up to get a Samsung 46 inch 1080P 120Hz LCD TV. I'm going to pair that with whatever blueray player is recommended.

My question is, will using video switching through my receiver degrade the quality of my picture at all? It does have HDMI in and out, but it only has HDMI 1.1 and the spec sheet under the website I linked to says it only supports 60fps.

I don't quite understand how the receiver can limit the refresh rate as I thought that was a function of the monitor, but there's a lot of things I don't understand :D

If running video through my receiver will limit the picture quality I can always run HDMI from the blueray player to the TV and optical from the blueray to the Receiver. I have a Harmony remote that can be programed to accommodate damn near any setup I choose...

my question is why do you need to? How many HD inputs does the TV have and how many do you need? I have never liked running my audio recieves as video switchers and have found there is almost always a work around.

You won't notice any picture degradation I'm pretty sure. HDMI 1.1 vs 1.3 doesn't really change picture quality, but adds other features that you likely aren't using. 1.3 will let you pass DTS-HD or TrueHD to the receiver if your receiver is capable of decoding HD audio, which yours doesn't.

Wikipedia is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdmi#HDMI_1.3 :)

You can't run a ps3 through a reciever w/ a HDMI switch...

I was pissed and BB wouldn't take it back. *sigh*

As in they would not take back your out-of-return policy item because the receiver was not malfunctioning? :dunno:

BB =/= Costo, WalMart of old.

No, I was pissed because I told the guy what I wanted to do (run ps3 and HDTV box through the reciever so I didn't have to keep switching the HDMI cables) and he assured me it would do it. Went home and tried to set it up to the best of my abilities, broke down and opened the instructions and went that route, and it specificly said that game consoles would not go through the reciever. Went back 2 days later told them my story and more or less said 'tough shit'. It's a nice reciever and my old one wasn't working so it's not that I didn't need it, it's just that I could be using a $200 one instead of a $300 one, not to mention I still need to get a HDMI switch that WILL work.

That's strange. I've passed my PS3 through my receiver using HDMI without issue. (I don't anymore because it only supports 1080i and not 1080p, but it worked fine).

BB has a 30 day return policy on home audio receivers, correct? You don't need a reason at all. If you still have time, go ahead and return it and buy the other one. Sounds like they were trying to avoid losing 100 bucks. :nono:

At any rate, I worked home theater for 3 months and never heard of any issues with the PS3 running through HDMI switches. :dunno: Is it isolated to a few receiver brands? They make HDMI switches specifically for the PS3 in the gaming dept at work so I'm surprised to here any receiver manufacturer, esp. Denon, would not have the same capability found in a cheap unit made by some off-brand. :dunno:

^ I'm thinking it's just the store. They're refusing to replace our Samsung Dryer as well (dries a little too well and WAAAAYYYYYYYY too long... like it never stops) even after 4 service calls.

120hz?

yikes!

not the frequency. That is fine. Just when people turn on the cinemotion or whatever trademark it is for Samsung, YUCK! Not only that but the tearing on fast motion scenes. Makes it horrendous!

anyway. Blu-ray player.

For that receiver. Your best bet is 5 analog out into the Denon. You never mentioned a budget though?

Ask to deal with the GM and if he/she doesn't do something about it, you need to find another BB to deal with. They can vary greatly on the experience store to store. Some are just horrible...
