well the question is open ended for a good reason :)

To those that did install a home theater (regardless of components). Why did you go that route?

For those that have not or are not contemplating a home theater. Why not?

I see you on AVS forums all the time. Wondered if it was the same figgie.

I dont have a dedicated home theater room but I have a decent setup in the family room.

Samsung 1080P 50" DLP TV
Pioneer Elite Receiver (Plan to upgrade to HDMI capable receiver)
Definative Technologies 500 watt 15" sub
Klipsch speakers
XBOX 360 with HD DVD addon
PS3 for Blu-ray.

Thats about it.....

For why, I just love watching movies and gaming. Nothing like a HD DVD/Blu-ray flic or an intense video game with stunning visuals and jaw dropping sound. Cant wait to upgrade my receiver once I am done with this 2J swap so I can enjoy the newer audio formats via HDMI. I have been a home theater buff since HiFi VCRs and laser discs back in the 80s.

oh hey

yep that is me!
I am ALL over the place.

Incredibly I do not own either HDDVD or Bluray yet. I just placed an order for the IN82 infocus projector and depending if best buy still has the XA2 @ $499 might get that. I am revamping my home theater room as it has to be demo'able as this is my business now... see my title ;)

Define "Home Theater"

We've got a 61" HDTV, Surround Sound, Digital Sat, 5-Disc CD Changer, etc in the living room, but I'm not sure I'd call it a "home theater".

Home theater all the way. It adds a completely new dynamic to movies, and depending how good yours is, its way better than the theaters in the fact there can be better sound, no people around you, no distractions, a pause function, and easy access to food that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

That is a good point,

I define home theater as what a consumer would use to view movies, Television (be it normal or HD). It does not have to be dedicated, it could be your living room, basement etc. :)

SO really almost Home Entertainment in a sense.

Though I like the word Home Cinema for dedicate rooms for movie watching.

for instance my old setup

BarcoGraphic 801 CRT projector (portly at 150+ lbs!)
8x4 DYI frame with black out cloth (107" diagnal)
Rocket RSC200 center channel
Rocket RS750 Left and Right Main
Boston Acoustic dipole surrounds for surround
Definitive Technology PF15TL+
Integra DTC 9.4 preamp
2 x Crown XLS 602 amplifiers
1 x Anthem MCA-2
Canary star Quad cable for speaker and XLR duties.

New setup.

Infocus IN82
AussieMorphic lens (for stretching 16x9 images to 2.35:1
11.5' (138")L x 4.9' (58.75")h 2.35 Cinemascope Aspect ration Acoustically transparent screen.
Klipsch KL-650-THX LCRs (3) (Left, Center, Right)
Klipsch KL-525-THX LCRs (2) (Surround)
Klipsch KW-120-THX subwoofers (2) (Subwoofers)
Klipsch KA-1000-THX subwoofer amplifier
Integra DTC 9.8 (newer model)
Crown CDI1000 x 3

to me i would think of it as having a projector and a room mainly for watching it, a room with no lights or with good covers on any windows to make it completely dark.

i got into it when my second house came with one, i bought everything for it and i enjoyed it since it made movies and sports events pretty badass.

in my new house i built another in my basement and it kicks ass so far :) was about $3,000 for 7.1 speakers a bit more for new electronics... hooked up a new turntable as well for music on top of everything else. next i just need to get a new projector as my old one is showing its age :) im using a couch right now and would like some seats better fit for it... i really should take a picture =/

the screen gives about a 150 inch picture but i have it at about 100 inch not high def it would be nice to have one i think thats what i'll get next :)

id been reading about some of those home theater projectors in popsci. sounded like they even had some special paint to use on the walls to bring out all the colors (certain shade of gray, maybe?) sounded great.

we've got a 37" panasonic lcd with a 1000w panasonic 5.1 'home theater' system (5disc changer and all that) and thats good enough for us, but im definitely planning a bigger one after college.

yes

if i recall it is called screen goo. Works well when space for a screen is none existant. :)

a couch works and works well. Lots of even the most expensive HT systems use a couch or three ;)
