I was thinking of trying a holset hx35 or hy35 on my 1j. I have stock injectors and US 2j turbo cams.

Anyone have experience with these? How do they spool?

Looks like mostly meant for diesel applications. the cummins site says that it will flow .46 kg/s = 60.9 lb/min at up to 3:1 pressure ratio. It is a journel bearing with 360 thrust bearing. comparable to a 50 trim say 500 rwhp

i had one on my 1j 2 years ago.... i liked it . but the turbo is just so large and heavy i ended up getting rid of it for a pt62-1 . about the same power and spool but much more compact. plus they have a t3 flange and my manifold is a t4 so i had to adapt it.also it only had a 2.5" exhaust and the 62-1 was 3" . it was nice and cheap to get going though .

Do some search and you won't have to weed out the BS.

I ran a holset hy35w, and another member here on the boards is now running it. The little HY35 will flow enough air to make 450hp on a 2.3ltr inline 4 Ford engine.

I suggest going with a hx40 with the 9cm hy35 rear housing. Spool should be instant (as in less than 3000rpm). They are bullet proof and when taken apart, are giant ct26 turbos inside.

Thanks for the replies! MDC what kind of spool were you seeing with the straight Hy35? How about you 1jzneil?

My car is used for drifting primarily so I like the quick spool and would love to retain it. I've been researching a lot an I think the hy35 with the 9 cm turbine will suit my needs. And the 4" vband exhaust is just fuggin hot! I'm looking for 400whp about 18psi. Any more than that and my poor w58 would explode!

Do you guys think the jdm 2j (440cc) injectors would be enough for this boost level? I'm kinda questioning it. 550cc would probably be more appropriate. I have standalone so it's really no problem. Maybe I should start by getting an r154 so I can make real power haha.

There's an hy35/40 hybrid on ebay right ow I've been eyeballing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hols...9QQihZ002QQcategoryZ33742QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

hmmm.

the 440s should be plenty. thats what i am running. i i found 15 small leaks in in my stock 1jz intercooler when i was running that turbo and it made it seem very laggy . but it was still at 3800-4200 ..like i said it should have been way lower but i didnt know i was leaking so much boost till i removed the setup. i was also running 20 psi and a home made log manifold with horrible flow. you shouldnt have any trouble getting 400hp with a smooth power band and quick spool.

Spool on the hy35 on my car was right at 3000rpms.

The Holsets as I have noticed, hit VERY hard. 2800rpms will be almost no boost, while 3000 you'll have 18+

Also, if you can, try for the Holset HE351CW. This is the hy35w, but it has the 90 deg snout off the front of it. It will flow almost 61lbs of air. Thatt could be good for over 500hp if you have the correct tune.

+1 for the HE351CW. the compressor is slightly larger then my hy35. i cant yet tell you how is spools, but it was damn cheap at $200 off ebay.

The HE351Cw flows almost 61lbs of air accoriding to Holsets website. Ive attached a compressor map of the HE351Cw from Cummins which states less.

T4 16cm^2 housing. i still dont recommend that large of a turbine housing. But at 10psi i would just barely beat a 12 second fox body stang. stock IC and lower IC pipe :). made a huge difference when i changed ic's and piping tho. could not keep traction at 12 psi in second. and passing traffic in the rain in any gear was almost pointless. and too scary.

would one of the 9cm housing fit the h1e? i had a guy from my local turbo shop call holset and they said the smallest size for the h1e was 14. which i ordered that one too haha. but it was a t3 housing. im tempted to go with another holset turbo for my 2j, but i am also looking at a precistion t67. maybe a tad smaller. i want more streetable this time, with the 7m and holset it was a freeway monster, kept up with a bike on the freeway with top off :) only a gsxr600 tho. 50-130. he never passed me, 12psi cracked ic:icon_bigg

damn

this is interesting how is the reliability of these turbos they sound like they make bad ass power but they are as cheap as ebay turbos whats the deal with that??

pretty much for reliability you cant kill them. they have shafts that are twice the diameter. they can flow a lot of air, i believe the hx40 is something like 72lbs/min. These turbos are designed to run high boost all day.

They are cheap on ebay because the stock dodge guys don't want them, and depending on the compressor housing location, you'll have a funky internal wastegate setup.

I know on my old hy35, I had to cut the wategate flange on the compressor housing off, and re-weld on a new one in the right location so I could clock the housing correctly.

But yes, they are pretty much indestructable. I have personally taken apart one from a Dodge Ram that had a little over a million miles on it. Internally it looked great.

Also, most of these turbos have pressure ratios of 30-44psi or more.

so how did he make so much power on 12 psi where he couldn't get traction in 3rd???? if trucks have them stock and dont make more than 300whp on 27psi??? makes no sense
