stock gauge is crap. mine wouldn't register boost til 5 psi. get an aftermarket gauge and be done with it. or if you really want to I'm sure you could get a new sending unit from toyota. that might fix it.

thats normal. when its -4 its in vaccum and theres not positive pressure being generated by the turbo. after it starts to spool it will go up as you said to 4 (im guessing you have it in mmHg) get an aftermarket boost guage and youll be good to go in real time.

the bottom half of the gauge is for vacuum...which is what your car is in until the turbo creates positive pressure. the top half is for the positive pressure the turbo creates.

yes the stock boost gauge sucks..but it still relatively works... if your only boosting 4psi then thats a problem...even if youre an auto it should be slightly higher then that...

The stock gauge is slow to react by design. There is a mod to make it react faster but I can't seem to find it.

As has been stated, you're better off with an aftermarket one anyway unless you're running under 8 psi.
