Like the title says. What's the highest possible octane that can be used in our cars safely? Say w/ a moderatly modified Supra, 300HP.

At 300whp (~11psi) you really shouldn't need more then 91 octane. If it is not pinging then higher octane is not going to do much for you except drain your wallet. If you were drag racing with no intercooler and it was 110deg outside it would be a good idea to run race gas. :icon_razz

You don't want to do it like that. You want to go the lowest safest you can go with.

Higher octane gas is not as combustable as lower octane gas. Going with something too high, would be unnecessarily over kill. You go higher octane than what the manual calls for if you have a high compression motor than stock or have a lot more air being force fed into your engine than what the stock setup would be. The more boost you give the egine, the higher octane you would need. For example, if you have 40psi--and I know you don't have that with only 300 HP--you would need race gas.

The higher octane stuff is for higher modified setups that can't run on what stock cars can handle because of detonation problems that result with further compression or radically increased boost.

EDIT: just like bigaaron said; he beat me to it.
