Hi everyone, I've been quite interested in mark III supras for a while now and needed a place to find some info. After some research, this looks like the place to be. My name's Andrew and I live in Canada. I'm currently looking at buying a 91 1JZ Supra  but I'm in a pickle...

The car is roughly $10,000 CND, has 71,000 Kms on it, and the body/interior are in excellent condition. Only thing that stopped me from buying it a few days ago was because someone else test drove it the saturday before and the clutch started slipping on it. They claim the car was never 'bagged' and is still stock so it wasn't used to drift.. Supposable the guy that test drove it just didn't know how to drive a manual.. After only 71k I would expect a clutch to still be able to take some abuse and work fine.

I'm still very interested in the car, and so I'm hoping someone a little more experienced with these type of cars could voice there opinion...

71,000KM, clutch slipping (Being replaced by owner), Think I should go for it? or will it be in the shop more then me driving it...

Go test drive it yourself and see if the clutch is ok or not.

Well, Thats the tricky part.. the car is located 6 hours away from where I live, and I have no car right now.. This would be my first.

I trust the company that imported the car that the clutch is slipping, and so there replacing it at no additional cost regardless if I buy it, but should it need replacing after so little KM's?

With enough torque and enough use, a clutch can start slipping at 70K Km. When i was reading your first post i thought your pickle was how to change the clutch. Then i read the seller will replace the clutch. I would only ask who is going to replace and using what parts, if there is a warranty, and be done with it.

Well, I'm about 90% sure that there is no warranty, the clutch will be replaced with another stock one, but if its normal to see a car with 70k and a clutch slipping then I suppose that the tranny should still be alright?

My pickle was that Im worried that there might be more wrong with the car, then just a slipping clutch but it has yet to show.

keep in mind that you are looking for a car almost older then i am. things are prone to break and that is just how it is. keep an eye out for the usuals and just be careful. hell, i drove to arkansas from iowa [8 hour drive] and baught my supra based on a sellers word. so far its been a slight uphill struggle with the car but im doing pretty good with it and am glad i drove so far to get it. i think u'll be happy with it and clutches are not that hard to get taken care of if u know what you are doing. with that said! test drive the thing!

Like campbellschunkySoup ra said... on a car that's almost as old as I am, things are going to be breaking. I think you'd be hardpressed to find a car with lower miles than 70K. Expensive and difficult to fix body damage (rust, rock chips, ect) results from high milage. Stuff like worn out bushings and seals can be fixed and are part of the experience of owning a Supra.

Imagine how bored you'd be, and how empty your garage would be, and how full your wallet would be, if everything on our Supras just stopped breaking :icon_razz

I think for 10 grand, it might be a bit steep if it's imported... But I don't think a slipping clutch is a big deal compared to a BHG :biglaugh:

You all make a good point, I'm just nervous about buying my first car and so I think I will serious reconsider buying the car again.

While importing a car myself is out of the question.. The price tag on this supra is OBO.

I guess this would also be a great car for me, considering I'm in school to become a mechanic :biglaugh:

I look forward to hopefully posting pics of the car :x:
Thanks for the fast responses.

If you're about to go spend 10K CAD on a car, you should definitly test drive it. Hell, bring a mechanic friend on the test drive. I know I test drive all the cars I have bought in the past before I bought them. If they are going to replace the clutch at no charge, you should be good.

^^^ Agreed! You should test drive first, especially for 10K!!!:aigo:
Really go over the car top to bottom.
I would even go as far as a compression test.
When they change the clutch, make sure you have a written receipt.
If you are gonna spend that kind of paper it better be in top shape!
Maybe wait until you find the right one that comes along.
As far as owning a MKIII, welcome to the wonderful world of constantly spending money!:icon_razz
I have owned 9 Supras, and love everyone!
It is worth every penny!
Now I am down to 2 and staying here for a while...

Good luck, and I hope you make the right choice.
