Hey guys, as I was driving home on the highway tonight my temp. gauge spiked and I panicked thinking it was a BHG. I got the car somewhere I could park it as fast as I could but that took WAY too long. My gauge was spiked past the red for probably a good two minutes and then I pulled over and shut it off. First few things I noticed;
- My engine bay was covered in coolant, and the coolant hose at the back of the motor had a small hole in it, if I squeezed the upper rad hose smoke would come pouring out of the hole on the other coolant hose.
- This is (I think) kind of a good thing as it points away from it being a BHG.
- Reservoir tank is still full, and there is zero pressure in the coolant system.
Now, where things get freaking weird is after I let it cool right down I tried to start the car again..... It turned over and fired up for about a second and then shut off. I can't for the life of me get the car to start, nothing obvious is sticking out at me, but it doesn't matter what I do, I try and start it, it fires for a second and then just dies. What the hell is going on! Any help is appreciated, I'm super frustrated. It's a mint ultra low mileage '87 turbo I've kept in hiding for the past three years. Yesterday was the first day since 2011 I've driven it. I spent the last week changing everything old (except a f*cking coolant hose) and installing a sp61gt.
The car is in really good shape otherwise, has a completely rebuilt 7mgte with 15,000km on it, HKS mhg, and all the supporting mods, and ran like a dream prior to this. I'm a little out of it at the moment, but antsy and dying to figure out what's going on. Any other tips, advice, etc. or things I should now aside from changing the oil after I cooked the motor would be great too. Thanks.

Also, I realize it's not generally a good idea to shut the car off when it's overheating but there was no pressure in the coolant lines and the whole damn system sprayed itself out on the highway... Now the car will start, but barely idles and sounds like shit.

No coolant in plug valley, engine bay has a good mist on it though. At first it just wanted to die, now it just has a super rough idle but will stay running. I feel so stupid, I thought it was a bhg so I tried to cruise the highway at super low rpm to get some airflow in and cool it down, that just made it worse I guess and I just drove it around longer with zero coolant. The entire system is empty short of the reservoir so it cooked for a long while. I really hope this didn't toast my motor... that engine cost waaaaaay too much money and I don't want to replace it so early :(

That wouldn't surprise me, long time with super high temperature and aluminum wouldn't do me any favours. I guess the heads probably warped now and the car will in that case behave like a bhg?

Only takes 400c to start the process, no coolant and you're there in minutes... :(

^agree, good luck with it though, hopefully if you crack her open there is no warping from the heat. Off topic @IJ. , 39,xxx posts, wow that's impressive
Deleted over 10K posts some time back ;)

post count means little it's quality of the posts that matters ;)

I bet your two minutes where ten. Should have called a tow truck sooner.

Cause you were there to know it was much longer than two minutes, overheating is overheating. It's like being a little pregnant, you're still pregnant.

Pull your plugs and shine a light down inside the cylinders, any of the pistons look steam cleaned?

Pulled all the plugs, pistons look good, oil looks okay too. I changed the hose, changed the coolant, changed the oil, and have been letting it run till it heats up and everything seems fine..... Going to go cruise around the neighbourhood and see if anything happens, no signs of a bhg so far. Fingers crossed, I may be the luckiest man alive. Still going to purchase a new head and make that the winter project though.

Before you panic... Realise this... If you get air in the system and the temperature gauge reads a pocket... It will spike. Your hose blew.. Coolant drained... Happened to me with the turbo coolant line right after I bought the car. It doesn't mean you hurt the engine... Air just gets hotter quicker. I'm guessing your fine.
