The book say 10 degrees, but you can go to 12 degrees for a bit of added power
Hey thanks!! You do not think the piston will "knock" when I add boost?:icon_razz

^^^ Id recommend leaving at what the books says like Shaeff has his set. Your less likely to run into problems down the road, however up to 12 BTDC is the highest you can go before running into more problems and complications. If I were you I'd leave it at 10* and increase your boost if you want the little bit added power. For NA's I think you can go to 12* or 13* BTDC max. I'm currently running 12* on my NA and have had no problems for the past 2 years. When I go turbo, I'll leave it at 10* because the GTE's seem to be a bit more problem prone if it is not kept up by the books and regular servicing

I bumped my timing up to 12 on my na supra and ran premium gas. I put it back to 10 and ran 87 octane. The car actually ran better on the 87, better timeslips too, not worth the cost of increase in gas imo.

I agree with you 100%. Before I changed the timing I was running 87 octane, when I changed to premium I was burning through gas like hell. I think for this summer I'm going to readjust it, replace my N1 exhaust with the Tanabe, get a K&N to replace my dirty stock filter and replace my fuel filter, and run 87 octane. I'm sure I'll be getting better gas milage than when I was at 10* and running 87 octane. Not only that, but when I was at 12* and ran 87 octane, it perfromed much better than on premium. When I was using premium the car felt hesitant and seemed to have slow acceleration. Maybe it was just feel :dunno:

I come from a land down under
2 degrees base isn't going to make a lot of difference either way.

Depending on Gas quality it might even put you into knock and the ECU will pull timing giving you worse overall performance.

A built motor is a whole different game.
