I just got an engine with a brand new block (and tranny) and rebuilt head, except it was left outside uncovered for like 6 weeks and #3 cylinder, up to the intake mani, was flooded with water... I was wondering if anyone here has any opinions or can help in any way to recover this besides hot tanking, rehoning and resurfacing the block at the machine shop??? I'm assuming that's what's gonna happen, but just wanna see what people think.

All cylinders except one are perfect, look brand new... Can still see the perfect cross hatching...

Everything underneath looks brand new as well...

Now the Bad Stuff... Definitely a setback...

Anyway, of cleaning this up without re-honing the cylinder?? Like is there anything I can put in there that would eat up the rust - I've heard Coke is good for that.... maybe not in this case, any feedback appreciated. I'm assuming it needs to get rehoned, but I just want to see any opinions out there and if there would be any chance of saving it... Remember this is a brand new block assembled by Toyota so I would've like to not mess around with the pistons, rods, crank, etc.

Valves a bit rusty, there was water that flooded #3 cylinder all the way to the intake manifold, so valves were in water...

I cleaned up the valves with a brush... Does it look like I really need a valve job or not ? More can definitely come off, this is with like 2 minutes of cleaning...

soak up all the water and buy a box of brake cleaner. you can try cleaning it up with an emery cloth? make sure you dont scratch it up though.

Actually I posted this on SF too and I think I'm gonna hae to rebore it... well, I have another block to use instead, this really sucks

Cylinder wall is pitted. Since I had nothing to lose, I put some Coke on it, LOL It did clean it up, but you can definitely see that it's pitted and probably will need to be bored out. Fortunately, I do have another engine in my car... BHG and possible rod knock, but the block itself should be fine...

yep thats rooted! get yourself two "bottle brush" hones use one to get as much rust out of the cyls as possable (dont hit the pistons) slide everything out, strip your block back hone it put new rings on those pistons and put it all together just make shure everything is clean and back in the same place

then enjoy!

EDIT: that engine was burning oil from somewhere last time it was run make shure you check the valve guides/stem seals and if you got the turbo aswell check that too
