so i have this 92 jeep grand cherokee 4x4

I was told the diff. was bad but i doubt it. The driveshaft was off when we got it so we tried putting it in 4WD High and seeing if it would drive which it did, it seemed to drive fine but it was driving in "FWD" mode heh, we drove it around the block with no problems. So today i put the driveshaft on and tried to put it in "N" on the high/low selector and we heard a grinding noise coming from under the driver side of the car, we then tried to put it in Park while the selector was in "N" and again it grinding. So finally i turned the car off and put it park.

So i guess my question is wtf could this be? I'm think its the transfer case since the noise seemed to be coming from its location even tho i should've went under the car and checked. Also how safe is it to drive the car in 4WD around town while just having the front wheels doing all the work?

I'm sorry i am a jeep noob and an 4wd noob. Thanks for any help.

I'm sorry I didn't realize you had the car running when shifting the transfer case. Some cars will grind gears if the engine is running and you shift from neutral into any gear. Shut the car off and select the gear then restart. My 4runner is able to shift while running but my coworkers suzuki xl.7 will grind when trying to shift the transfer case.
