Hey all, I'm taking a simple engineering class. The final was to tear apart a little briggs and stratton 5 horse motor and put it back together. Finished that and need to answer a bunch of questions for a write-up. The only question I don't know and can't find for the life of me, is "Why does the flywheel have one section made from a different material?"
I assume this is specific to little once cylinder lawn mower engines.

Not really, just one from before we disassembled anything. Maybe it will help

When you die Ian...I'm going to put your brain on a small harddrive and sell it as the Pocket Ian...they will sell millions...I'll even have a catch phase...never leave home without your pocket IJ...It will be awesome.

lol

BTW thanks for the engineering lesson. Learn something new every day.

externally balanced?
Makes for a smaller crankcase if you run some of the weight outside ala 454 Chev.

Oh that's right, totally forgot about the magneto.

Awesome, thanks for your help.

I know it's been answered but,

That magnet...isn't it denser than the rest of the flywheel?

...Meaning the immediately surrounding metal would need to be light-weight (aluminum) in order to balance the wheel?
...also maybe something to do with the magnet not directly touching a ferrous (can be magnetized) metal?

More out for personal knowledge here than anything else...lol.

please note - it's 2:16am and I'm kinda tired.
