Hi all,
My son just bought a 89 with a divorced downpipe.. and we live in maryland where that will not pass inspection. what we need is a temporary fix.. I think just a std downpipe to put in while it gets inspected..
Anyone have a cheap suggestion?
I am not even sure what I need. Did the BIC pipe just bolt on to stock on both ends? or is it more complicated?

any help will be appreciated..

You'll need the stock elbow in order to use the stock catted downpipe. There is also a 2nd separate cat at the downpipe. I was able to pass the sniffer with just the first cat, but it will fail visual.

Yep, I've kept mine hanging on the wall for a few years for this very reason.

Funny thing is, the car is tuned so well, it almost passed with NO cats. (The guy takes his mirror, looks under the car, says "I guess that'll do..." then sticks the sniffer up the tailpipe and runs the test... LOL I just had a 3" pipe wrapped with thermal tape.. No cat, not even a bulge... LOL

So, it failed by like .003 parts per billion, and I had to go through the process of removing the DP and put the stocker back in, putt putt over to the testing station and it passed with flying colors, and very low emmisions. (my tree hugging friends would be proud of this old car.)

Good luck. Do you guys have a visual inspection, or just a sniffer? If it's just the sniffer, you can use one cat to pass generally. Just drive around first and get it nice and hot before you take the test. (They need heat in them to work best.)

Up here in Wa state we just use other peoples cars.. They don't check VIN's, only the green peice of paper you give them saying you need tabs... my dad's supra = has cats.. Mine = does not. Works perfectly.

Thanks for all the help people! These forums are the best place for help.
In Maryland we have a very thorough state safety inspection , but only when a car is first registered. We bought this car in PA, so the MD inspection doesn't like the looks of the DDP.. That is the reason we need to change it out. My son is out of the country right now and I am trying to help get this car inspected. He knows much more than me about what he needs, so please bear with me.
Can I post pictures of this piece so you guys could tell me exactly what parts I need? I don't know about the "elbow" and such...
thanks again and thanks for the offers to ship me an old one. That looks like my best plan. Also, it woould be ideal if we could even just borrow a stock one from a local maryland person and give it back to them after a month or something.. I think , long term, the BIC DDP will go back on after all this inspection stuff is done.

pics of what I have now...

yes you will need the elbow and dp... shipping shouldnt be too bad i would take americanjebus's offer. Some states are weird about inspection stuff...

last time i went to get inspected they were like you fog lights dont work.. im like yea i know.. we cant pass you unless you fix them... im like if i take them off and come back will you pass me.. they are like yea... took it out to the parking lot removed them brought it back... got my sticker went back into the parking lot and put them back on... i guess if they are on the car they have to work.. i guess that would be the same with a visual inspection of a cat? as long as you have one they wouldnt know that it came stock with two...
