Help! Heatsoaking starter!!!

ok well for the passed few weeks my starter has been getting heatsoak and i cant figure out how the heck to fix it!!! i've searched but i've gotten no awsners! ok what it does is when i run my car for any longer then 15min and shut off my car it wont start up untill it's cooled down! starter wont click nothing!!

my question is, is there any way to fix this without getting a new starter and heat wrapping it in exhuast wrapping??

These starters DON'T get heat soaked. The exhaust is on the other side of the block. You have other problems. Perhaps the relay, or ground, or just a tired starter. Brushes do get worn out. So when a starter is warm, it takes more current to turn it over.

i would bet $25 that it is wiring/electircal issues. take off all the wiring to the starter and check it.. ANY defects, frayed, corroded ANYTHING and just flat out replace it it costs very little... make sure your positive connection from the battery to the main fuse box is PERFECT CONDITION or else that will be affected as well.. the simplest little electrical issues are magnified when its really hot and the starter would require more load.

That used to happen to me, it happened if i shut the car down from anywhere between 10 minutes and 3 hours. I kept a piece of pipe and hammer in the car, and I'd tap the starter. It would always start right after that. I replaced the starter contacts and that did the trick.

I'm with the replace the wires, or clean up the contacts, and it sounds like your starter has given up the battle. (Or at least the carbon contacts on the motor are worn out, which is why the hammer and pipe works... You jar the carbon dust off and get a contact again...)

I'd imagine that replacement carbon contact brushes are not that expensive, then again, I have not had to replace them yet.

You don't even have to replace the brushes, there are two copper contact pieces that wear out. They are like $5. The only problem is getting the starter out :<.

If you have a nice DVOM and jumper wires you can do a voltage drop test on the cables. That is also a likely cause.

On a side note, I read somewhere from Bosch who rebuilds starters, that a great deal of starters turned in still work. They only had bad connections, or somebody was just guessing.

where exactly is the starter located? haha it's like the one thing i havent worked on the car yet...

It's in a place thats very unpleasant to reach. Its mounted on the driver side of the transmission bellhousing. You can see it under the intake manifold on the passenger side. Like i mentioned before, if you're ever in a jam try tapping it with a hammer.
